Luxury Travel in Sicily: Why the Elite Are Choosing Taormina Over the Amalfi Coast

Sicily is no longer just Italy’s best-kept secret. The island’s blend of cinematic landscapes, authentic hospitality, and discreet luxury is turning it into the go-to destination for well-traveled individuals seeking refined experiences. With interest shifting from the overcrowded Amalfi Coast, Sicily offers an elevated Mediterranean escape—one that balances beauty, privacy, and modern convenience.

Why Sicily Is Attracting High-End Travelers

“High-net-worth individuals want seamless, stress-free access to these sought-after places without sacrificing privacy and exclusivity,” says Charlotte Wells, director of global tailormade product at Abercrombie & Kent. Sicily meets this demand by offering understated luxury in destinations that are still relatively uncrowded, at least compared to other Italian hotspots.

The rise in tourism cannot be attributed solely to the popularity of shows like The White Lotus, although its presence did contribute. The island’s growing allure is also rooted in long-term investments and increased visibility within the luxury sector.

“Over the last two decades, Sicily has started to grow its visibility and certain brands have contributed to the heightened awareness among discerning travelers,” explains Massimiliano Puglisi, general manager at Grand Hotel Timeo, a Belmond Hotel in Taormina.

Luxury Travel Trends: From Social Media to Set-Jetting

Social media has played a key role in spotlighting Sicily’s turquoise waters, historic ruins, and celebrated cuisine. At the same time, long-favored destinations like the Amalfi Coast are increasingly strained by mass tourism, pushing affluent visitors toward alternative Mediterranean gems.

In Sicily, experiences still feel personal. Boutique gelaterie serve traditional scoops rather than oversized novelties, and hotels perched along the cliffs offer exclusivity without the crowds. The shift is clear: travelers with means are looking for authentic, crowd-free experiences, and Sicily is rising to meet that expectation.

The Power of Taormina and Villa Igiea

San Domenico Palace, a Four Seasons Hotel in Taormina, gained global fame as the backdrop of The White Lotus season two. Yet beyond pop culture, the town has long been a destination for refined travelers.

“There’s definitely been a palpable rise in tourism, but I wouldn’t call it an onslaught,” says Rossella Beaugié, founder of luxury villa operator The Thinking Traveller.

Villa Igiea, part of the Rocco Forte Hotels group, has embraced this momentum. The hotel recently decided to remain open year-round to appeal to those looking to experience Sicily’s charm during quieter months.

“One of the reasons we decided to remain open year-round for the first time was to provide our guests with the opportunity to visit during the previously overlooked winter for a unique experience without crowds,” says Isabella Giglia, spokesperson for Rocco Forte Hotels.

Where Luxury Travelers Are Heading Next

Besides Taormina and Palermo, more visitors are exploring southeastern towns like Noto, Scicli, and Modica. These areas offer baroque beauty, elegant private villas, and access to unspoiled countryside.

“The west coast is the next up-and-coming area,” Beaugié explains, “with wealthy people from Milan and overseas investing in properties close to the long, sandy beaches and the UNESCO sites of Selinunte, Segesta, and Agrigento.”

Demand for privacy is growing. In 2023, Villa Igiea saw a sharp rise in full buyout requests. In some cases, ultra-wealthy guests have rented entire villages for private events.

Exclusive Experiences in Sicily

Luxury travel in Sicily is not limited to where you stay. High-end travelers are asking for private yacht charters along the coast, vineyard tours led by local winemakers, and after-hours access to historical landmarks.

“Private yacht charters along the coastline, exclusive vineyard tours led by the fourth-generation winemaker, and after-hours access to historic landmarks are some of the most requested excursions that allow our clients to avoid the throngs while still immersing themselves in the charms of Sicily,” adds Charlotte Wells.

New Direct Flights from the United States

To meet demand, airlines are improving access. Starting May 21, United Airlines will launch a direct seasonal route between Newark and Palermo three times per week. The Boeing 767-400 will offer 34 Polaris business class seats—currently the only lie-flat option between the U.S. and Palermo.

That same day, Delta Air Lines will introduce nonstop service from JFK to Catania. The 767-300ER will feature 26 Delta One seats, complete with chef-curated meals and Missoni-designed amenity kits.

“Even before boarding, the first-class experience begins at the brand-new Delta One Lounge,” says Jooyoung Kim, director of international network planning for Delta.

Conclusion

With more luxury properties, immersive experiences, and better air access, Sicily is claiming its place as the Mediterranean’s new standard in refined travel. It offers what today’s sophisticated traveler truly seeks: elegance, space, and authenticity—without compromise.
