Villa Sola Cabiati: The Lake Como House You Take in Full

By Riccardo ValliSeptember 13, 20266 min readStyle & Living Desk

Villa Sola Cabiati is not a large hotel suite. It is a different way to stay on Lake Como. The whole house, six suites, twelve guests, and a team looking after one party and nobody else.

The distinction shows up at dinner.

In a hotel, even a private table belongs to a larger operation that has other tables to run, other guests arriving and a kitchen working to more than one clock. Here the house organises itself around the twelve people staying in it, which is the reason to take it for a family gathering or a few days among close friends instead of simply booking the grandest-looking address on the lake.

Butler, housekeepers, chambermaid, private chef. Grand Hotel Tremezzo offers the house for exclusive use with all of them in it. The villa sits less than a mile down the road, minutes by car or boat, and it has its own jetty. Booking it means taking a private residence, not a wing of the hotel.

Six suites inside a historic house

The roots are early sixteenth century. It was built for the Duchess of Carretto, passed to the Dukes of Serbelloni in the eighteenth, and expanded then in the neoclassical style. The arabesque gardens in front and the interiors, with their paintings, tapestries, ceramics and antiques, belong to that second chapter.

Six suites. Each with its own bathroom and sitting area, twelve beds in total. The grounds split in two: the arabesque garden in front, a private pool in the park behind.

That arrangement is what makes a house party survivable.

A gathering needs places to be together and somewhere for one guest to withdraw without leaving the property, and six bedrooms on their own would not answer the second half of that. The sitting areas and the two outdoor settings, garden in front and pool behind, do.

For three generations travelling together, settle the room allocation before the invitations go out. Ask Tremezzo for floor plans, bed configurations and what exists for a guest who cannot manage stairs. Six suites are not necessarily six interchangeable units, particularly in a protected historic building.

The interiors are part of the experience

Frescoes from the school of Tiepolo. Murano chandeliers, imperial Chinese porcelain, terrazzo floors, plasterwork. These are not references reproduced to suggest an aristocratic atmosphere; they are the fabric and contents of the house.

And a bed. Napoleon and Josephine slept in it at Palazzo Serbelloni in Milan, and it was moved out here for safekeeping when the allies bombed the city. It is a historical object, not a bedroom category available to guests.

Interiors like these are occupied differently from a new build.

The pleasure is living alongside them. The condition is knowing which rooms and objects take everyday use and which do not, and a family with children should settle that with the butler on arrival rather than discover it on the third afternoon.

Make one dinner the centre of the stay

Silvio Vettorello, general manager of Grand Hotel Tremezzo, which has run the villa since 2017, singles out a private dinner in the Sala degli Stucchi, on the piano nobile, as one of the house’s defining evenings. Lake on one side, a decorated ceiling overhead. No restaurant reservation reproduces that.

There is a less formal side too: the villa chef, meals outside, time around the private pool in the park behind the house. That range matters. A private stay should not ask its guests to perform a grand occasion at every meal.

Build the visit around one dinner in the Sala degli Stucchi and keep the other evenings lighter. Settle menu, wine, table and service with the house team in advance, then let the meal have the whole evening. A major celebration may need a separate event agreement; an overnight booking should not be assumed to include an unlimited guest list.

What the Tremezzo connection adds

The Tremezzo relationship is a real part of what is being sold. Dedicated staff in the house. A full hotel operation a mile up the road.

What the hotel does not publish is what villa guests may use over at Tremezzo. Get the list for the intended dates in writing: restaurants, spa appointments, pools, transfers. A relationship between two properties does not make every service available at every hour or in every season.

The villa’s own jetty makes boat outings straightforward, including a vintage boat. For a house party, take one substantial excursion instead of treating the lake as a sequence of appointments. A few hours on the water and a return to a prepared lunch make good use of both the destination and the house.

An autumn house party, not only a summer villa

Tremezzo makes a cold-season case for the house. A vintage boat, a cooking class with the villa chef, private yoga, panettone and Vin Santo, the Christmas markets. That makes it worth enquiring about well beyond the pool-season brief, though none of it is a dated availability calendar for 2026 and 2027.

The appeal in cooler months is easy to understand: the sitting rooms, the collection and the dining room carry more of the day. Plan that stay around the interiors, the food and the group, and treat boat outings and outdoor dining as possibilities.

Confirm the exact opening dates, heating and service arrangements for the house, and separately the facilities operating at Grand Hotel Tremezzo. A winter villa stay need not resemble a summer hotel stay to be worthwhile; it simply needs to be booked on the right terms.

What a full-house quotation should answer

Start with dates and numbers, then pin down the minimum stay, staff coverage, meals and drinks, event permissions and transport. Tremezzo publishes no rate and no minimum for the house. Twelve beds says nothing about how many visitors may join a dinner or a reception.

A private chef in the house is not the same as food and wine being in the rate. Nor does full service mean every treatment, every trip on the vintage boat or every request is prepaid. Those distinctions should be resolved once, in the proposal, rather than repeatedly during the holiday.

Our Lake Como hotel comparison is useful for guests who still want to weigh this against several suites in a hotel. Choose the hotel for independent routines and public rooms. Choose Villa Sola Cabiati when being together in one private house is the point of the trip.

Luxury.it perspective

Six suites and twelve beds is a small number that asks a great deal.

A hotel suite lets a family arrive separately, eat separately and meet at dinner if they feel like it. A whole house removes that escape hatch. That is exactly why people book one, and exactly why the wrong group regrets it by Wednesday. The building supplies the occasion here, with Tiepolo-school frescoes, Murano glass and a bed Napoleon and Josephine slept in at Palazzo Serbelloni before it was moved out of Milan for safekeeping. The staff have to make it possible to forget you are hosting.

Settle the room allocation before the invitations go out, and get the Tremezzo access list in the proposal.
