Tuscany ยท Italy

Luxury hotels in Tuscany.

Wine estates, converted castles and the art of doing very little, very well, in Val d'Orcia and Chianti.

The Brief

Tuscany is a landscape you check into.

The best Tuscan hotels are not buildings, they are estates. Hundreds of hectares of vines, olives and cypress, with a spa in the cellar and a chef in the kitchen garden. You come here to drive white roads, eat long lunches and let the schedule dissolve.

Choose by valley. Val d'Orcia south of Siena is the postcard, all rolling wheat and lone farmhouses. Chianti Classico between Florence and Siena is denser, greener, closer to the cities. Both work, but transfers between the two eat afternoons.

Insider Notes

A car is not optional here.

Book the car with driver for at least the transfer days. Tuscan estates sit twenty to forty minutes from anything, which is the point, and a driver turns wine tastings from a compromise into the plan. Most estates arrange vintage Fiat or Land Rover drives through their own land.

If the group is six or more, compare the hotel math against a staffed estate on our Tuscany villas page. And for the tables worth detouring for, from Osteria di Passignano to the countryside stars, the Michelin guide we keep is the map.

The Luxury.it Perspective

Tuscany measures luxury in distance. The further the nearest neighbor, the better the estate.

Concierge

The right estate depends on the season.

Harvest, truffle weeks, May gardens. Tell us when and who, and we will place you on the right property.

Questions

Good to know

Should I stay in Val d'Orcia or Chianti
Val d'Orcia for the iconic open landscape and total quiet, best with three nights or more. Chianti for shorter stays, denser wine country and quick access to Florence and Siena. Under three nights, choose Chianti.
When is the best season for luxury hotels in Tuscany
May, June, September and October. September adds the grape harvest, October the truffles. July and August are hot and busy, while many estates close from November to March.
Do I need a car in Tuscany
Yes. The estates are rural by design. Either self drive, which is easy on these roads, or book a driver for tasting days. Helicopter transfers from Florence are available for the larger properties.
