The most interesting new address in London retail is not a shop. It is a house.

RH, the American design brand, has opened RH London in a restored Mayfair mansion, unfolding galleries of furniture and interiors across historic rooms, together with dining and wine spaces that turn a showroom into a destination.

Retail learns from hotels

The old luxury retail model was transactional: enter, browse, buy, leave. The new model is residential. RH’s galleries are staged as inhabited spaces, rooms you move through the way you would move through a private home, with a table waiting at the end.

That is hospitality logic applied to retail. Food and wine extend the visit. The visit builds the relationship. The relationship sells the sofa. The building itself, a Mayfair mansion with real architectural history, does the work no advertising can do.

Mayfair is where London concentrates its version of quiet power: galleries, members clubs, tailors, family offices and some of the city’s most valuable residential streets. A design brand opening here is not choosing a retail location. It is choosing a social context.
