Piaget has put a minute repeater inside the contemporary Polo collection and capped it at five numbered pieces.
The white-gold watch measures 48mm across and 9.3mm deep. Reference G0A51038. Inside it the automatic calibre 1290P carries hours, minutes and the repeater, and a partially open gold dial leaves part of the striking mechanism in view.
Nine point three millimetres for an automatic repeater is a serious piece of engineering. Forty-eight millimetres across is a serious piece of watch.
Five a year is not a five-piece edition
Piaget’s language is worth reading closely. The maison describes five numbered pieces produced in a year, and it has not announced a final edition size or a closing date for the reference.
Run it for five years and 25 watches exist. Stop after one and there are five. Nothing published so far settles which.
That distinction matters at this end of the market, where scarcity is priced. An edition of five is finite the day it is announced. Five a year is a production rate, and a production rate can be extended, reduced or ended by a commercial decision.
The structure does give Piaget something useful: control over allocation and over the hours its finishers can actually supply. It also means a buyer asking about long-term rarity is asking about intent, not about a number engraved on a caseback.
The diameter matters more than the profile
A 9.3mm case is restrained for this complication. Repeaters need air to sound, gongs need room to run, and an automatic winding system usually adds to the stack.
The case is 18-carat white gold and holds the Polo’s cushion shape inside a circular outline. Water resistance is 30 metres.
Thin helps a watch sit close. It cannot make 48 millimetres discreet. Lug span, overall length, the weight of solid white gold and how the case curves at the edges will decide whether this reads as composed or simply large, and none of that comes across in a product photograph shot against white.
Try it on. There is no substitute at this size.
The 1290P comes back to the Polo
Piaget built the 1290P architecture for the Polo Emperador Minute Repeater in 2013. It winds itself through a platinum micro-rotor, beats at 21,600 vibrations an hour and holds about 40 hours.
So this is not the maison’s first repeater, nor the movement’s first outing. It is the complication returning to the Polo in the collection’s current design language.
The micro-rotor is the choice that makes the rest possible. A full central rotor would sit across the movement and hide the architecture, which in a watch sold partly on what you can see through the back would be a poor trade.
Forty hours is adequate for daily wear and short for a watch that will live in a collection. Leave it off the wrist over a weekend and it will need resetting before the repeater is worth using again.
The 64 decibels is Piaget’s own measurement
Piaget states a sound intensity of 64 decibels, three harmonic partials and a damping factor of 2,600, with the hours chiming at G-sharp and the minutes at A-sharp.
What has not been published is the protocol. Distance, room, background noise, and whether the watch was worn, held or resting on a surface all move the number, and there is no industry standard that would let this figure be set against a decibel claim from another maison.
Volume is also the least interesting part of a repeater. Tone, the pace of the strike, the separation between hours and minutes, the absence of mechanical noise underneath, the length of the decay: these are what a collector actually hears.
The only reliable test is a quiet room and the watch on a wrist.
Piaget’s own component counts disagree
The launch page gives the calibre 430 components and more than 150 hours of hand finishing and assembly.
The maison’s separate technical page for the 1290P lists 407 components, 44 jewels, a movement thickness of 4.8mm and the same 40-hour reserve.
The gap is probably explicable. Modifications made for this reference, a line drawn between the base calibre and the complete acoustic assembly, or a technical page that has not been refreshed would each account for it. Piaget has not reconciled the two publicly.
Component count says nothing on its own about quality. It is still worth resolving, because both numbers come from the same house and describe the top of its collection, and a buyer at this level is entitled to documentation as precise as the mechanism.
Guilloche on the dial, mechanism underneath
The standard version has a gold dial with hand-worked sunray guilloche, an opaline outer track, blue PVD details and an opening through which part of the repeater can be seen.
It is not a skeleton. Piaget has kept enough dial to hold the Polo’s identity and a conventional time display, and has opened only the part worth looking at.
That makes it more legible than a fully open movement, though nobody will mistake it for a discreet watch. At 48mm with a working mechanism on show, it is not trying to be.
The high-jewellery version goes further
Reference G0A51017 sets the bezel with baguette-cut blue sapphires, combines baguette and brilliant-cut diamonds across the case and opens the dial completely.
It runs to roughly 9.4mm, a fraction thicker than the standard reference. No price has been published.
The two watches are for different collectors. The partially closed dial keeps the standard version inside the Polo family. The jewelled one turns the movement and the stone setting into a single object, and the Polo name becomes a starting point.
The published prices differ by 87,000 euro
Piaget and Monochrome both give the price on application.
Deployant reports 330,000 euro for the standard reference. Swisswatches reports 417,000 and puts availability at November 2026.
An 87,000-euro gap is too wide for currency conversion alone. Taxes, market-specific pricing, a revision between reports or a simple error in one of them would each explain it.
Which leaves the watch, for now, at price on application, with two specialist figures on the record and neither one confirmed. Anyone in the allocation conversation should ask for the number in writing for their own market, with local tax stated.
What to inspect
- Fit: how 48mm sits across the wrist and whether the lugs overhang.
- Sound: volume, tone, pace and any mechanical noise behind the strike.
- Slide: resistance and consistency through a full activation.
- Legibility: hands against guilloche and the open mechanism.
- Movement: whether this reference runs 407 or 430 components.
- Production: allocation policy, and whether a final year is planned.
- Price: written confirmation for the buyer’s market, tax included.
- Service: intervals, turnaround and how the watch travels for work on the repeater.
Luxury.it perspective
The Polo Minute Repeater is a piece of thin-watch engineering that has decided not to whisper.
The 9.3mm profile is the achievement. The 48mm diameter is the statement. Five pieces a year creates scarcity in the present tense without promising a finite total, which is a different proposition from a numbered edition and should be understood as one.
Two things deserve clarifying before allocation: the component count, and the price. At this level the paperwork ought to be finished to the same standard as the movement.
