On Lake Como, the view does the selling before the kitchen has said a word.
That is the problem with Bellagio and Varenna. Both towns are beautiful. Both sit in the emotional centre of the lake. Both have terraces, ferries, lake views, narrow lanes, hotel dining rooms and enough visitors to fill almost every table in summer.
A full restaurant here does not always mean a good restaurant. Sometimes it means the terrace was perfect and the meal was forgettable. Sometimes it means the table was right for lunch, but wrong for dinner.
The question is not: what is the best restaurant in Bellagio or Varenna?
The better question is: what kind of Lake Como evening are you trying to have?
A serious grand-hotel dinner is not the same as a lake-fish lunch. A Varenna sunset table is not the same as a Bellagio garden meal. An aperitivo on the water is not a full dinner. A Michelin table is not always the right table after a day of ferries.
Here is the Luxury.it edit.
1. Mistral, Bellagio
Best for the serious grand-hotel dinner
Mistral is the most formal restaurant choice in Bellagio.
Set inside Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, it carries the old Lake Como grand-hotel atmosphere: piano, lake views, international guests, and the feeling that dinner is part of the hotel’s institutional memory. Michelin describes Mistral as located at the tip of Bellagio’s promontory, where the lake’s two branches meet, with a covered veranda overlooking the opposite shore, villages and residences.
This is not where you go because you want a casual plate of pasta after a ferry ride. You go because you want Bellagio at its most polished.
The restaurant is open to outside guests, according to the hotel’s own restaurant page, and its setting is one of the strongest dining rooms in town.
Book it if: you want a serious dinner, grand-hotel atmosphere and lake-view ceremony.
Avoid it if: you want something relaxed, spontaneous or low-key.
2. Alle Darsene di Loppia, Bellagio
Best for a quieter Bellagio lunch or dinner
Alle Darsene di Loppia is the restaurant to know when Bellagio itself feels too obvious.
It sits in Loppia, near Villa Melzi, slightly away from the town’s most crowded centre. The official restaurant page lists chef Matteo Gramatica, the address at Via al Porto 1, and opening hours for lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Saturday.
This matters because Bellagio can become too compressed in high season. Sometimes the best meal is not the one in the most central lane, but the one that gives the day more air.
Alle Darsene is useful for a proper lunch after Villa Melzi, or dinner when you want Bellagio without the full ferry-crowd feeling.
Book it if: you want polished food away from the most obvious Bellagio movement.
Avoid it if: you want the biggest lake-view drama.
3. Ittiturismo Mella, Bellagio
Best for lake fish and a more local idea of Bellagio
Mella is the anti-performance table.
It is located in San Giovanni, outside the main Bellagio centre, and its official site lists the restaurant at Piazza San Giovanni Battista 6.
The reason to go is lake fish. That sounds simple, but it matters. Lake Como is too often eaten as if it were a generic Italian destination: pasta, pizza, spritz, tiramisù, repeat. A proper lake-fish restaurant reminds you where you are. Condé Nast Traveller also highlights Ittiturismo Ristorante Mella as a place built around the local catch, in the fishing village of San Giovanni near Bellagio.
This is not the most glamorous meal on the lake. It may be one of the most correct.
Book it if: you want lake fish, local texture and a Bellagio meal that is not only about the view.
Avoid it if: you want formal service or a highly designed dining room.
4. La Vista, Varenna
Best for the Varenna sunset dinner
La Vista does exactly what the name promises.
Set inside Albergo Milano in Varenna, the restaurant’s own page describes one of the most striking views of Lake Como and lists dinner service from April to late October.
This is the Varenna sunset table. You do not go here because you want the lake’s most experimental cooking. You go because the angle is right, the town below is small, the lake opens beautifully, and dinner feels like the day has finally stopped moving.
Varenna is often chosen by travellers without a car because it works well with train and ferry connections. That means many visitors pass through quickly. La Vista is a reason not to treat Varenna only as a transport solution.
Book it if: you want the romantic Varenna view.
Avoid it if: you want an unfussy local trattoria or a cheap dinner.
5. Il Cavatappi, Varenna
Best for the small food-led dinner
Il Cavatappi is the small-room answer in Varenna.
It is not a huge lake-view restaurant. It is more intimate and food-led. Explore Lake Como lists it at Via XX Settembre 10 and describes it as a small, well-reviewed Varenna restaurant where reservations are important.
This is the kind of place that helps Varenna avoid becoming only scenery. The problem with lake towns is that the view often gets more attention than the kitchen. Il Cavatappi works for the opposite reason: the room is small, the meal is the reason, and the dinner feels less like a tourism exercise.
Book it if: you want a more intimate Varenna dinner.
Avoid it if: you need a panoramic terrace.
6. Osteria Quatro Pass, Varenna
Best for a relaxed central Varenna meal
Osteria Quatro Pass is useful because not every meal on Lake Como needs to become a statement.
The official restaurant site lists homemade pastas, lake fish and desserts, with its address at Via XX Settembre 20 in Varenna.
This is the table for a more relaxed Varenna night: central, easy, local enough, not trying to be the most photographed place on the lake. Use it when the group wants dinner without a project.
Book it if: you want a comfortable Varenna meal in town.
Avoid it if: you want a grand terrace or special-occasion polish.
7. Varenna Caffè Bistrot
Best for aperitivo, not dinner ambition
Varenna Caffè Bistrot is useful when you treat it correctly.
The Varenna tourism site describes it as having an outdoor lakefront area on Riva Grande, serving from breakfast through lunch, dinner, snacks and aperitifs, with no reservations accepted.
This is not where you build the most serious dinner of the trip. It is where you sit on the water, have coffee, a drink, a light bite, or an easy aperitivo and let Varenna do the work. That is a legitimate Lake Como pleasure.
Book it if: you want lakefront drinks or an easy informal stop.
Avoid it if: you want a controlled dinner reservation.
8. Bilacus, Bellagio
Best for the classic central Bellagio dinner
Bilacus is the central Bellagio classic.
The restaurant’s official website calls it a historic restaurant in the centre of Bellagio and lists lunch and dinner hours, with Monday closure.
This is not the hidden choice. It is the reliable central choice when you want Bellagio to behave like Bellagio: lanes, tables, wine, Italian food, evening movement.
Do not ask it to be Mistral. Do not ask it to be Mella. Ask it to be a good classic Bellagio dinner.
Book it if: you want a central, traditional Bellagio evening.
Avoid it if: you want the most refined or quiet meal on the lake.

Do not let the view decide
Do not book Bellagio and Varenna restaurants only by view.
The lake can seduce you into forgiving a bad meal. That is a mistake. Decide first whether the evening is about view, food, romance, convenience or ceremony. Then choose the table.
Mistral is not Mella. La Vista is not Il Cavatappi. Varenna Caffè is not a serious dinner plan. Bilacus is not a hidden discovery. That is fine. A good Lake Como trip is not made of identical meals.
Luxury.it perspective
The best restaurant between Bellagio and Varenna depends on the evening. If you want ceremony, choose Mistral. If you want lake fish, choose Mella. If you want a Varenna view, choose La Vista. If you want small-room food, choose Il Cavatappi. If you want a relaxed town meal, choose Quatro Pass or Bilacus. Lake Como dining becomes better when you stop asking the view to make every decision.
