Breuil-Cervinia is preparing a €200 million cable car built to carry passengers from the village to Plateau Rosa in roughly 17 minutes.
Cervino The One will run as two 3S gondola sections, linking Breuil-Cervinia with Plan Maison and continuing to around 3,500 metres at Plateau Rosa. The target is to open for the 2029 to 2030 winter.
Lift operator Cervino Spa is developing the scheme and LEITNER is building it with Cogeis, Ivies and BGF. It is among the largest cable-car investments currently planned in Italy, and it could change how guests use the Italian side of the Matterhorn.
Two 3S gondolas replace a fragmented ascent
Six kilometres of route. About 1,500 vertical metres.
The first section replaces the existing connection between Breuil-Cervinia and Plan Maison. The second continues towards Plateau Rosa, broadly following the line of an earlier high-altitude installation, and LEITNER is clear that these are two separate 3S lifts rather than one uninterrupted cable.
A 3S system runs on two stationary track ropes and one moving haul rope, which buys larger cabins, better stability in wind and long spans between towers compared with most conventional monocable gondolas.
All of it useful on a high-altitude route exposed to serious weather. None of it makes the installation immune to wind, icing or a safety closure.
The published target is 17 minutes instead of about 50
Village to Plateau Rosa currently takes something like 50 minutes. The design target is 17.
The system is planned to run at up to eight metres per second and carry approximately 3,000 passengers an hour, with 56 cabins designed by Pininfarina.
Those are design targets, not measured results.
The real ride will still include boarding, waiting and moving through the intermediate station, and queues can build outside the cabin system during holiday weeks, equipment failures or weather interruptions.
Even so, the saving is large enough to redraw the practical geography of the resort.
The Italian side has needed a stronger ascent
Cervino Ski Paradise already links Breuil-Cervinia with Zermatt through the high-altitude ski area and the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing.
Switzerland has poured money into its upper-mountain infrastructure, giving Zermatt a strong year-round passenger route to the border. Cervino The One is Italy’s answer: modernise the approach, improve the flow from the village into the same international system.
Cervinia and Zermatt sell related but different holidays.
Zermatt has the denser luxury-hotel network, the car-free village identity and stronger international recognition. Cervinia has wider pistes, direct road access from Italy and a different price structure.
A faster ascent erases none of that. It does make the Italian side more attractive to guests who want efficient access to the international domain without basing the whole trip in Switzerland.
Hotel guests will feel it before the ski market does
Everyone describes the benefit through skiing capacity. The hotel consequence may matter more.
A guest in Breuil-Cervinia currently budgets for several lift stages and the waiting between them before reaching the highest crossing points. Cut that and hotels gain a real argument for short stays, private-guided days and mixed groups whose members do not all ski at the same level.
Families can split more easily, with some staying around Plan Maison while stronger skiers push on towards Switzerland. A faster return also stops a lunch or a spa appointment in the village from ruling out a morning on the upper mountain.
Luxury is sometimes a private facility. In a ski destination it can equally be the removal of 30 minutes of machinery and queuing from each end of the day.
The project is meant to work beyond winter
Cervino Spa presents the development as year-round tourism rather than a replacement ski lift.
Plateau Rosa and the international crossing already pull pedestrians, sightseers and summer visitors alongside skiers, and larger cabins on a simpler route open the upper mountain to non-skiing hotel guests, weather and operating schedules permitting.
Official destination material ties Cervino The One to the redevelopment of the village departure area and the facilities at Plan Maison.
A strong summer operation would help Cervinia extend demand past the winter calendar. Hiking, cycling and high-altitude access are all there. Zermatt’s complete international summer-hospitality identity is not.
The cable car is infrastructure for that shift, and infrastructure is not the same as the shift happening.
Stations will matter as much as cabins
The guest experience begins at the valley station, long before anyone sits in a Pininfarina cabin.
Arrival routes, ski storage, ticketing, changing areas, guide meeting points, retail, restaurants, pedestrian access: those decide whether the system actually removes friction.
Earlier project material indicated expanded services at the stations, including lockers, dining and family facilities, though the final operating mix and the tenants have not been announced.
Plan Maison is the one to watch. A badly organised interchange gives back the minutes the faster cable sections just saved.
The architecture also has to hold two very different scales at once: the technical demands of a 3,000-passenger-per-hour system, and the visual sensitivity of a valley head dominated by one of the most recognisable peaks in Europe.
Regional money sits inside the €200 million
The project cost is approximately €200 million.
The Autonomous Region of Aosta Valley is expected to put in €70 million through a capital increase, with the balance attributed to Cervino Spa. Finaosta, the regional financial company, controls the majority of the lift operator.
That public component makes this a regional tourism decision as much as a commercial lift investment.
Judge it accordingly: passenger numbers, year-round demand, local employment, village spending and the modernisation of public areas, rather than ticket revenue alone.
Italian and Swiss approvals still matter
As of early August, project representatives said the remaining Italian and Swiss authorisations were close to complete. The upper station crosses into Swiss territory, so the coordination runs across a border.
LEITNER has announced the project and describes construction as starting shortly. Pambianco reported that the principal building phase should advance on the current timetable.
Treat 2029 as a target.
Construction seasons at 3,500 metres are short, and weather, engineering conditions, approvals and cross-border coordination can all move the programme, with the two sections possibly progressing at different speeds.
Nobody should book a hotel for winter 2027 or 2028 assuming the new ride already exists.
More capacity can move a queue instead of removing it
Cervino Spa says 3,000 passengers an hour will cut queues.
It solves the bottleneck at the base. It also delivers more people to the upper pistes, the restaurants, the border crossing and the connecting lifts in a much shorter window.
Managing those flows falls to the wider ski area, especially over Christmas, the February school holidays and clear-weather weekends.
Then there is the environmental question. Faster access invites more year-round visitors into high-altitude terrain already carrying intensive infrastructure and changing snow conditions.
The measure of Cervino The One is not how many passengers it can move. It is whether the mountain above Breuil-Cervinia can absorb them safely, without eroding the reason they came up.
What visitors should know now
- No immediate change: current lifts and timetables govern travel for the coming seasons.
- Opening target: the 2029 to 2030 winter, subject to construction and approvals.
- International access: the route strengthens the Italian approach to Plateau Rosa and the link towards Zermatt.
- Weather still decides: a modern 3S installation improves stability and guarantees nothing at altitude.
- Summer potential: pedestrians and non-skiing hotel guests may gain as much as winter skiers.
Luxury.it perspective
Cervino The One could give Breuil-Cervinia something worth more than another luxury hotel: a convincing relationship between the village and the mountain standing over it.
Seventeen minutes to Plateau Rosa makes the Italian side easier for skiers, for non-skiers and for international hotel guests. It also loads pressure onto everything reached after those 17 minutes.
The project succeeds when the ride feels shorter without making the mountain feel smaller.
