Demna’s Gucci: Why the Second Chapter Matters More Than the Shock

By Riccardo ValliJune 29, 20263 min readStyle & Living Desk

Demna at Gucci was designed to be a shock.

That part worked.

The more difficult part starts after the shock has been absorbed. A surprise appointment can dominate headlines, but it cannot run stores, dress clients, rebuild confidence or make a house desirable season after season. Gucci is too large for provocation alone. It needs a language that can travel from runway to leather goods, from image to retail, from fashion insider conversation to clients who buy the house because it makes them feel powerful.

That is why the second chapter matters more than the appointment.

Gucci is not Balenciaga

This is the obvious warning, but it still matters.

Demna’s Balenciaga changed luxury because it understood the absurdity of modern status: hoodies, corporate uniforms, paparazzi dressing, dystopian glamour, ugliness made expensive, irony turned into silhouette. It was often brilliant because it understood the world’s bad taste better than the world did.

Gucci is a different animal.

It needs seduction. It needs colour, leather, sex, travel, bourgeois memory, Italian surface, the tension between bad taste and good taste. Tom Ford understood one kind of Gucci desire. Alessandro Michele understood another. The challenge for Demna is not to repeat either. It is to discover whether his eye for contemporary culture can be translated into a house whose most powerful codes are less brutal and more sensual.

Gucci cannot become Balenciaga in Italian shoes.

The product question

The appointment will be judged by images, but the future will be judged by products.

Bags, shoes, belts, tailoring, leather, sunglasses, jewellery, scarves, travel pieces. Gucci needs objects that people want without requiring the entire runway explanation.

This is where Demna’s challenge becomes commercial.

He is excellent at making symbols. Gucci needs symbols that sell at enormous scale while still feeling culturally charged. That is much harder than making a meme. It is also where the house can become interesting again.

A new Gucci bag under Demna will matter more than a provocative show set.

A new loafer proportion may matter more than a celebrity seating chart.

The surface noise is the easy part.

What to watch

Watch how he treats the logo.

Demna understands branding almost too well. The danger is obvious overuse. The opportunity is sharper: making Gucci’s visual identity feel dangerous again without becoming cartoonish.

Watch the tailoring.

Gucci needs body, not only attitude. If the clothes do not seduce physically, the cultural concept will not be enough.

Watch women.

Demna’s most powerful work has often involved armour, distortion and control. Gucci requires a different register of desire. The question is whether he can make women feel glamorous without flattening glamour into parody.

Watch the leather goods.

This is where the house’s future will be decided.

Why this is a Luxury.it story

Gucci is one of the few houses that can change the way an entire city feels during fashion week. A strong Gucci season affects hotels, dinners, retail appointments, stylists, celebrities, buyers and the mood of Milan itself. That is why Luxury.it should not cover Demna’s Gucci as only a designer appointment.

The better angle is access and appetite. Will clients want the objects? Will the stores feel alive? Will the brand create a reason for private clients to return? Will the runway translate into products that matter beyond the fashion internet?

The appointment was industry drama.

The second chapter is business, culture and desire.

Luxury.it perspective

Demna’s Gucci is not interesting because it is shocking.

It is interesting because the shock is already over.

Now the work begins: make Gucci desirable again to people who do not only want a conversation piece, but a wardrobe, a bag, a shoe and a fantasy that feels worth entering.

The first chapter was appointment.

The second must be appetite.
