The easiest mistake in Sicilian hospitality is to treat the island as a beach with a hotel on it.
Sicily is too strong to be reduced to beach, pool and breakfast. It has cities, ruins, markets, Baroque towns, volcanoes, vineyards, fishing ports, inland roads and a cultural density that makes ordinary resort language feel thin.
Icona’s Costa Ragusa Resort is interesting because it sits in a part of Sicily that has not yet been over-translated for the international luxury traveller.
The resort opened on the south-eastern Sicilian coast on 1 August 2026, with 105 rooms and suites, high-end dining, wellness and a positioning built around privacy, quiet luxury and connection with the landscape.
That gives Ragusa something it has not always had: a clear five-star coastal hospitality statement.
Why Costa Ragusa matters
The phrase Costa Ragusa is doing a lot of work.
It is not yet a global shorthand like Amalfi, Costa Smeralda, Portofino or Taormina. That is precisely why it matters. The best luxury openings are not always in destinations already exhausted by recognition. Sometimes they are in places still forming their international vocabulary.

The Val di Noto problem
South-east Sicily already has luxury attention.
Noto, Modica, Ragusa Ibla, Scicli, Marzamemi, Siracusa and Ortigia have been growing for years among travellers who want Sicily with architecture, food and style. But the hotel offer has often been fragmented: boutique palazzi, countryside masserie, restored villas, design stays, private houses.
A 105-room luxury resort changes the equation. It gives international travellers a base with more infrastructure, more service and more confidence. That can be useful, especially for guests who want the Val di Noto but do not want to assemble the trip from several small addresses.
The risk is that a resort makes the area too easy. The opportunity is that it makes a less obvious coast legible.
Quiet luxury, if it means something
Quiet luxury is an overused phrase. Here, it only works if it means restraint.
The south-east of Sicily does not need Costa Smeralda theatre. It does not need Ibiza energy. It does not need a hotel trying to create a social scene before understanding the land.
Icona’s strongest possible positioning is different: privacy, wellness, long light, pale stone, olive trees, sea, food, Val di Noto excursions, and days that do not require the guest to prove they are somewhere expensive.
The resort’s own material highlights wellness through Longevity Suite treatments and personalised rituals, suggesting that wellbeing is intended as part of the stay rather than a decorative spa note.
That could work in Sicily, if the hotel lets the island stay ahead of the brand.
Who the south-east suits
Icona’s Costa Ragusa Resort is for travellers who want Sicily but need hotel structure.
It suits couples, privacy-seeking families, international guests doing south-east Sicily for the first time, and people who want Noto, Ragusa, Modica, Scicli and the coast without staying in a city hotel every night.
It is not for someone who wants Palermo chaos, Taormina glamour or Aeolian island movement. That version of the island belongs to other addresses, including the cliffside convent that made our ranking of Italy’s most irreplaceable hotels.
This is a different Sicily. Slower. More south-eastern. Less obvious.
Luxury.it perspective
Icona’s Costa Ragusa Resort matters because Sicily’s luxury map is still being written. The island has great hotels, but its coastlines do not all speak the same language. Taormina is theatrical. Palermo is aristocratic. Menfi and Sciacca are golf-and-resort. Noto is cultural and architectural. The Ragusa coast is now trying to become more visible. The project will succeed if it does not simply import generic resort comfort. It must make the south-east feel worth staying on. Not just visiting.
