Palazzo Shedir offers a particular kind of Roman luxury: a small number of bedrooms surrounded by rooms built for a much grander life. The attraction is not a long list of hotel facilities. Frescoed salons, formal passages, a mirrored gallery. The point is having them as part of the stay instead of places passed through on the way out.
The property occupies a noble wing within Palazzo Borghese in Campo Marzio. That distinction should remain clear from the first enquiry: reserving Shedir does not mean taking over the entire Palazzo Borghese. Within its own spaces, however, the difference between an individual room booking and an exclusive stay is substantial.
The reception rooms are the reason to look closely
Luxury Travel Advisor visited in 2024. It describes roughly 1,000 square metres of accommodation and reception rooms: original frescoes, a marble staircase, period salons. The Galleria degli Specchi is the most theatrical setting for a dinner, while more intimate rooms offer another scale for conversation.
The appeal is proportion. The Hall of Railings alone runs to 100 square metres, the Hall of Mirrors to 87, against three bedrooms. A large contemporary hotel may devote considerable space to its public rooms, but those spaces must serve many unrelated parties. A residence with few bedrooms offers the possibility of a more personal relationship to architecture that would otherwise feel ceremonial.
Think about the moments outside the formal dinner. Somewhere for the first guests to meet. A room for the hosts to sit afterwards. Breakfast without dispersing across several hotel floors. Those are the reasons to enquire about a place like Shedir before comparing its bedroom area with a conventional suite.
A room booking and an exclusive stay are different products
The current Leading Hotels of the World listing provides individual room categories and also describes the property as available for private occasions. The palazzo’s own site now lists three: the Chapel Room at 42 square metres, the Cembalo Junior Suite at 60, and the Borghese Suite at 113. Older coverage counts four, adding a 30 square metre Superior; take the number from the property. Butler service, a pool, sauna and Turkish bath are listed among the amenities.
The Leading Hotels of the World takes bookings for single rooms here. None of that makes an ordinary reservation an automatic buyout. Ask which reception rooms and wellness areas will be shared, reserved for an event or available exclusively. Privacy should be described room by room and time period by time period, not left to the word “private” in an introductory paragraph.
Nobody publishes a buyout rate or a minimum stay. For an exclusive stay the quotation has to identify every included bedroom, the shared spaces that become yours and any access retained by staff or other users. A beautifully photographed gallery is only a private dining room for your party if the agreement says so.
Choose the bedroom after choosing the stay
The current accommodation list includes the Borghese Suite, Chapel Room and Junior Suite del Cembalo. Their names point to different parts of the residence, not interchangeable decorations applied to identical rooms.
That visit calls the Chapel Room intimate and curved. The Borghese Suite is the larger arrangement, with a separate living room. Use those descriptions to begin the conversation, then request the current plan for the unit being offered. Historic properties reward that level of attention.
A couple choosing between 42 square metres in the Chapel Room and 113 in the Borghese Suite is really choosing how much time to spend in the salons. An extended family asks different questions. Who sleeps near whom. Which bedrooms need stairs. Whether any room relies on extra bedding. A maximum occupancy figure does not explain how comfortably a group will be arranged.
A private dinner needs more than a beautiful room
Palazzo Shedir’s event presentation places tailored dining within its offer. So it suits a particular celebration. One where the meal is part of a longer evening at home, and not a restaurant appointment followed by another transfer.
Begin with the table. Gabriele Muro, executive chef of Adelaide at the sister hotel, caters the palazzo. How many guests will dine, how many will sleep in the residence and which room best fits the occasion? A small family dinner and a larger reception may use the same address but require quite different staffing, menus and timing.
Ask for the current dining proposal rather than importing an old menu or a hotel chef’s name from a previous article. Establish the full price of hosting: food, drinks, service, room use, flowers, music and any production arrangements. The room supplies much of the character; a restrained table may allow it to remain the focus.
Shedir is not another name for Hotel Vilòn
Hotel Vilòn and Palazzo Shedir share the wider Palazzo Borghese setting, but they are two separate hotels. Vilòn is a boutique hotel; Shedir offers the much smaller accommodation inventory and grand historic reception spaces discussed here. Images, room names and dining arrangements should not be moved casually from one to the other.

The right brief for this house
Shedir suits a small group marking an occasion. Or a couple for whom the interiors are the reason to be in Rome at all. It makes less sense to pay for the possibility of private life here and then spend every meal elsewhere.
There is a 120 square metre wellness floor with an indoor pool, sauna and Turkish bath, and parking for two cars in the gardens. Keep one substantial part of the stay inside: a dinner, a long breakfast or an evening in the reception rooms, subject to the arrangements booked. The interest lies in allowing the architecture to become familiar.

That ratio is inverted for a hotel and it is the whole point of the place, because the ordinary arrangement in Roman luxury gives a guest a generous bedroom inside a building whose grand rooms are shared with every other guest, and here the grand rooms outnumber the beds by a margin that makes them plausibly yours.
The Galleria was built by Carlo Rainaldi and finished in May 1678. It and the Salone delle Ringhiere can be yours for an evening in a way a hotel ballroom never is. The house opened in June 2023, as Palazzo Vilon. It sits in the same Palazzo Borghese as its sister hotel, with a Borghese prince still living in another wing.
A suite gives you a room within that story. An exclusive stay gives your party time to occupy more of it. Settle which one you are buying before arrival, while the house is still an idea rather than a set of keys.
