Speake Marin has introduced the Tourbillon Royal Blue, a five-piece limited edition priced at CHF95,000 before taxes.
The watch sets the maison’s automatic SMA05 flying-tourbillon calibre inside a 42 mm Piccadilly case in 5N red gold. It goes on show during Geneva Watch Days, where Speake Marin receives at Hôtel Beau-Rivage from 2 to 6 September.
What makes it worth a paragraph is not the blue, and not the gold. It is where the colour has been put: across the architecture of an openworked movement instead of on a dial.
Royal Blue is part of the movement’s structure
The tone comes from Pantone 287 C, which Speake Marin counts among its signature blues.
Instead of a solid dial, a Royal Blue PVD treatment covers the three-dimensional framework around the exposed calibre. Polished bevels and microbeaded recesses break up the reflections, and 5N red gold warms the whole composition in a way titanium or steel never would.
The layout is deliberately off balance.
The flying tourbillon sits at roughly 1.30, the engraved barrel appears near 10 o’clock, and the power reserve occupies the lower half of the watch at about 7.30. Heart-shaped hands and luminous markers hold on to some legibility across all that open metal.
Call it what it is. Not a blue-dial version of a quiet dress watch, but a mechanically exposed object built so the colour walks your eye through the movement.
The Piccadilly case is still the recognisable part
Piccadilly measures 42 mm across and 12.35 mm thick in this edition.
Flared grooved crown, projecting lugs, a circular case body: the signatures are all present. The crown itself is 5N red gold, set with a blue sapphire, and sapphire crystals close both the front and the caseback. Water resistance is listed at 3 ATM.
Those numbers describe a collector’s complication, not a sports watch.
Three atmospheres covers ordinary incidental exposure and nothing more, no swimming and no active marine use, and the red gold, the open architecture and the ostrich strap all point the same formal direction.
A 42 mm diameter does not make a watch oversized on its own. Lug geometry, total length and the way the weight of a gold case settles will decide how the Piccadilly actually wears.
Handle it in Geneva. A front-facing product image will not answer that question.
The micro-rotor keeps the tourbillon visible
The automatic SMA05 uses a fully integrated tungsten micro-rotor in place of a large central rotor covering the caseback.
Winding therefore happens automatically while the bridges, the barrel and the tourbillon stay in view. Speake Marin lists 290 components, 33 jewels, a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour and a 72-hour power reserve when fully wound.
The 60-second flying tourbillon carries 62 moving components and one fixed component, at a published weight of 0.56 grams.
A flying tourbillon is supported from one side only, with no upper bridge across it. You get a cleaner view of the rotating cage, and the engineering and finishing have nowhere to hide.
The calibre runs at 3 Hz. Not a high frequency by current standards, but it suits a tourbillon whose whole point is that you sit and watch it turn.
“In-house” needs reading with context
Speake Marin describes the SMA05 as an in-house manufacture movement.
The same maison openly credits Le Cercle des Horlogers as a significant part of the development and identity of its movement programme, and its website describes the collections as shaped by that specialist movement constructor.
Both statements can be true. Independent brands routinely work through closely integrated specialist manufacturers, engineers and component partners while keeping proprietary architecture and design of their own.
Ask the precise questions anyway.
Who developed the calibre. Where the components are made, where assembly and regulation happen, which parts are exclusive to Speake Marin, and how the SMA05 will be serviced in fifteen years.
No independent watch is improved by pretending one small atelier cuts every screw. Transparency beats a simplified manufacture label, and a maison confident in Le Cercle des Horlogers has no reason to avoid the subject.
The finishing has to justify CHF95,000 in the metal
Official specifications list Côtes de Genève, microbeaded surfaces, polished bevels, gold-coloured treatments and a mirror-polished tourbillon bridge shaped around the maison’s topping-tool motif.
At this price, inspect all of it under controlled light.
Photography flatters a coloured openworked movement, making it look deeper and more uniform than it reads on a wrist at arm’s length. Geneva is where you check the transitions between polished and matte, the cleanliness of the interior angles, the edges of the PVD and the finishing of the components official images never show.
Listen to the micro-rotor too. Test the crown, watch the power-reserve indication move, and decide whether those luminous hands stay readable against all that turning architecture.
The Royal Blue ostrich strap is hand stitched with gold-coloured thread on a gold pin buckle. It completes the statement, and plenty of owners will want something quieter for the days they actually wear it.
Five pieces creates rarity, not value
Production is limited to five watches worldwide. Each caseback is engraved to mark the edition, and the Tourbillon Royal Blue is sold through enquiry or pre-order rather than an online checkout.
Five is a genuinely small run. Future resale value is a separate question with a separate answer.
Secondary performance for an independent tourbillon rests on the collector base, auction visibility, service support, pricing discipline and continued desirability at Speake Marin. A low edition number substitutes for none of that.
Start the purchase argument with the watch: the Piccadilly case, the asymmetric SMA05, the blue against 5N red gold, and your own relationship with the maison.
Buy it because only five exist and you are betting on scarcity without demand.
Where to see it during Geneva Watch Days
Speake Marin presents its 2026 releases at Hôtel Beau-Rivage, Suite 422 on the fourth floor, from 2 to 6 September.
Geneva Watch Days gathers 71 maisons across the city rather than under one roof. Public areas are open, while individual hotel suites and collector presentations usually run on appointment.
Book the Speake Marin meeting specifically. Assuming a five-piece tourbillon will sit unattended on a tray all week is optimistic.
Allow enough time to compare it with other Piccadilly and openworked references. Without that comparison you cannot separate what the Royal Blue treatment contributes from what the SMA05 architecture was already doing.
What to ask before ordering
- Availability: whether all five pieces remain unallocated.
- Delivery: the expected completion and delivery schedule for each watch.
- Tax: the final price in your country, including VAT, import and local duties.
- Warranty: the standard cover and the conditions for any extension.
- Service: recommended intervals, expected turnaround and indicative tourbillon-service costs.
- Straps: alternative colours and delivery time for replacements.
- Certificate: edition documentation and registration through the maison’s watch passport system.

Five pieces at CHF95,000 makes physical inspection non-negotiable, and Geneva Watch Days hands you the room to do it. Judge it on finishing, on fit and on long-term service. Not on the arithmetic of a limited edition.
