The Cape Town EDITION has opened with 142 guestrooms and suites at Quay 7, on the V&A Waterfront. Marriott announced the opening on 27 October. The hotel stands in the working harbour, facing Table Mountain and overlooking the waterfront’s new superyacht marina, and it is the brand’s first hotel in Africa, according to Hotel News Resource and Travel Wires. The design is by Neri&Hu, working with Cape Town-based architects. The largest suite is a 240-square-metre Penthouse. Shale, the main restaurant, is led by executive chef Phil Carmichael, and on the roof EAVE sits beside a heated pool. The details come from EDITION’s release on the opening and the trade reports that followed it.
142 rooms and suites at Quay 7
“The hotel’s 142 guestrooms and suites balance refined comfort with a distinctly residential sensibility”, the release says. EDITION has not published the number of suites. Nor has it published rates or an exact opening day. Two named suites set the scale: the Penthouse covers 240 square metres and the Harbour Suite 112.
The release opens on the setting, “Framed by Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean”, and the hotel is built to face both. Quay 7 is part of the working harbour. Museums, galleries, restaurants and shops are within walking distance in the Waterfront district, as Hotel News Resource notes, and the new superyacht marina sits right below the hotel.
Shale, EAVE and the Punch Room
Shale is the main restaurant, run by executive chef Phil Carmichael with George Hunter as beverage partner, while EAVE, the rooftop restaurant and bar, sits next to the heated pool. The Pool Terrace extends it outdoors. Downstairs, the Lobby Bar has a pool table, and the Punch Room serves punches meant for sharing, one of them called Brandewijn, according to Travel Wires.
The superyacht marina below the hotel
The marina is the Waterfront’s other project at Quay 7. Its six 30-metre Damen pontoons will berth eight yachts of up to 90 metres, at a cost of 230 million rand, and in July the V&A Waterfront said the work was on track for completion on 31 October, with an official opening planned for 1 November. The pontoons are fixed to the quay wall beside the hotel. Few city hotels can say that.
A spa below sea level, and space for 200
The spa is below sea level. It has five treatment rooms, a couples’ suite, a sauna, a steam room, infrared beds and recovery boots, with products by Omorovicza, and there is a gym open around the clock. For events, the hotel has a ballroom for up to 200 guests, a boardroom, two meeting studios, a private terrace and Vantage, a rooftop space.
“As one of the world’s most compelling cultural capitals, it is a natural home for EDITION.”
That is George Fleck, who leads the EDITION brand at Marriott. For Graham Wood, chief executive of the V&A Waterfront, “The opening of The Cape Town EDITION is an important milestone in the V&A Waterfront’s continued evolution”. The general manager, Leonie Andereya, wants the hotel “to feel as relevant to a Capetonian as it does to someone visiting the city”.
The Luxury.it perspective
The Cape Town EDITION is a city hotel with a resort’s view. Table Mountain stands across the water, the rooftop pool looks over the marina, and the spa sits below the waterline. It opens ahead of Cape Town’s high season, which runs through the southern summer, so the first full test comes from December. At 142 keys it is close in size to The Lake Como EDITION, which has 148, as in our report on the Como hotel. For travellers who split the European winter with a trip south, it is now the brand’s address at the other end of the map.
