Thompson Rome opens near Piazza Venezia: 69 rooms, 19 suites and a rooftop

By Alessandro ContiOctober 28, 20263 min readOpenings Desk

Thompson Rome, the first Thompson Hotels address in Italy, has opened with 69 rooms near Piazza Venezia. Hyatt announced the opening on 27 October. The hotel stands on Via delle Botteghe Oscure, in a 1940s building whose renovation restored original elements such as a marble staircase, with the Roman Forum, the Pantheon and the Colosseum a short walk away. Nineteen of the 69 keys are suites. The largest is the 104-square-metre Thompson Suite, with an 80-square-metre private terrace. The restaurant, LYVE, is run by executive chef Fabio Fioravanti, and LYVE Rooftop looks out over the city. The figures come from Hyatt’s release on the opening.

69 rooms and 19 suites on Via delle Botteghe Oscure

Hyatt describes Thompson Rome as “a 69-room hotel”, and the opening marks “the Thompson Hotels brand’s debut in Italy”. The suites range from Junior Suites up to the Thompson Suite, which covers 184 square metres with its terrace. The other 50 keys are rooms. Rates have not been published.

The address is central even by Roman standards. Via delle Botteghe Oscure runs from the edge of Piazza Venezia towards Largo di Torre Argentina, past the Crypta Balbi museum, and the Capitoline Hill, the Ghetto and Campo de’ Fiori are all within a few minutes on foot. The building dates from the 1940s. Its renovation brought back original details, the marble staircase among them. No architect has been named.

LYVE Restaurant, LYVE Rooftop and the lobby lounge

“At LYVE Restaurant, Executive Chef Fabio Fioravanti brings a contemporary Mediterranean approach”, Hyatt writes. Seafood leads the menu. Upstairs, “LYVE Rooftop pairs views across Rome with cocktails, Italian aperitivi and a menu designed for sharing”. The Lobby Lounge covers the rest of the day, from coffee and light dishes to aperitivo and cocktails. The city’s restaurant openings keep coming too, as in our report on the summer openings in Rome.

Gio Pomodoro and the painters of the Scuola Romana

The hotel’s art starts with the building. During the renovation, “a sculptural wall and inlaid floor by celebrated Italian artist Gio Pomodoro” came back into view, and ANSA reports that they had been hidden for decades. Around them hang works by artists “including Francesco Del Drago, Giangaetano Patanè, and Guido Strazza”, tied to the Scuola Romana and the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo. A rotating artist-in-residence programme is planned. On the seventh floor, “Empire of Light” is a photography-led experience.

“Rome reveals itself over time, through its neighborhoods, its art and, most importantly, its people.”

That is Arturo Gomez, the general manager. Amar Lalvani, Hyatt’s chief creative officer and president of its Lifestyle Group, started from the same place. “Rome has such a strong identity, so we wanted Thompson Rome to start with the city itself”, he said. In the Italian version of the release he adds that Hyatt wanted a Thompson that would feel at home in Rome, a place travellers want to discover.

Thompson, Hyatt and the new map of Rome

Thompson is Hyatt’s lifestyle brand, and Rome is its first Italian city. In July we reported that the hotel was due later in 2026, with 69 rooms, as part of Hyatt’s wider push into Italy. The same plan includes a Hyatt Regency of 238 rooms near Termini station and a Park Hyatt in Taormina, expected in 2028. Thompson is the design-led part of it.

The Luxury.it perspective

Thompson Rome is a compact hotel, 69 keys in one building, and its strongest card is the address. Piazza Venezia, the Capitoline and the Forum are on the doorstep. The rooftop puts domes and ruins in one view. The art, from Gio Pomodoro to the Scuola Romana, gives it a Roman identity of the 20th century. Rates are the open question.
