The Milan Outdoor List: Where the City Eats and Drinks This Summer

By Food & Drink DeskAugust 10, 20265 min read

By seven in the evening, Milan empties its offices into its courtyards.

It is the least advertised luxury the city has: behind anonymous doors and past unremarkable gates, Milan keeps a parallel network of gardens, cascine and canal-side terraces where the summer actually happens. Visitors queue for rooftops with a skyline. Milanese book tables under a wisteria.

This list is that second city, edited. Eight addresses, from a regenerated farmstead under Gio Ponti’s Torre Branca to a kitchen garden on the Naviglio Pavese, chosen for one quality the famous terraces cannot fake: they feel like Milan being itself. The map follows you as you read. Tap a pin and the page comes to you.

Cocktail Bar · Bullona

LOM Dopolavoro

An 1870 cascina brought back to life by a group of young owners, LOM is what the Milanese dopolavoro was always meant to become: a courtyard that shuts the city out without pretending it does not exist. In the hot months the outside tables are the point, with cocktails and chef Daniel’s snacks built around small Italian producers, a short and deliberate cellar rather than a long showy one. Cocktails run 8 to 10 euros, which in this city counts as a quiet act of resistance.

Osteria & Bistrot · Parco Sempione

Cascina Nascosta

Hidden is the literal name, and for once the word is earned: a Lombard farmstead inside Parco Sempione, directly beneath Gio Ponti’s Torre Branca, revived by a group of associations led by Legambiente. It is a community project first, with farmers’ markets, a bicycle workshop and a carpentry studio, and an aperitivo destination second, which is exactly why the aperitivo is good. The bistrot cooks what nearby producers bring in, with plates from 6 to 18 euros, eaten under the trees of the park while the rest of the city looks for parking.

Garden Restaurant · Naviglio Pavese

Erba Brusca

Far enough down the Naviglio Pavese that arriving feels like leaving Milan, Erba Brusca is the city’s original kitchen-garden restaurant: the orto is not a backdrop, it is the supplier. The tables sit in the green, the menu follows what the garden decides, and the whole operation has the rare confidence of a place that never needed the centre of town to matter. Book lunch on a clear day and you will understand why the Milanese treat this address as a small holiday.

Restaurant & Garden Bar · Naviglio Pavese

Motelombroso

A former casa cantoniera on the Naviglio Pavese, rescued from abandonment by two young owners and turned into one of the city’s most complete summer arguments: a garden where you drink wine lying on the grass, and a gastronomic dining room led by chef Nicola Bonora when you decide the evening deserves structure. Few places in Milan move so easily between the two registers. Come at golden hour, stay through both.

Dinner & Drinks · Porta Ticinese

Fonderie Milanesi

You reach it through a gravel courtyard shared with workshops, which is the correct way to reach anything good in this city. At the end sits a private garden, a small urban jungle of plants and string lights, and inside, rooms of exposed brick that earn the word intimate without candles doing all the work. Fonderie is the address for the dinner that starts as a drink, the weekend brunch that starts as an excuse, and the Milanese art of being somewhere without being seen arriving.

Via Giovenale 7, Milano · Directions

Cascina & Bar · Porta Romana

Un Posto a Milano

Cascina Cuccagna is a working eighteenth-century farmstead restored in the middle of Porta Romana, and Un Posto a Milano is its bar and kitchen: courtyard tables, long benches, the feeling of being in the countryside while standing five minutes from the metro. Treat it as the Milanese do, as a drink under the vines more than a destination dinner, and it becomes one of the most quietly restorative hours the city offers. Cocktails around 7.50 euros, which buys you the eighteenth century.

Via Cuccagna 2/4, Milano · Cocktails ~7.50€ · Directions

Tapas Bar & Serra Bistro · Porta Venezia

Oasi

Two registers under one roof on Piazza Oberdan: an informal outdoor tapas bar where the aperitivo runs Mediterranean, pan y tomate next to mondeghili, strawberry gazpacho next to ceviche, and the Serra Bistro, a greenhouse dehors with a more structured kitchen, from vongole gnocchetti to grilled seppia with caciocavallo. Oasi is what Porta Venezia does best: cosmopolitan without effort, Milanese without nostalgia. Bistro plates run 16 to 22 euros.

Piazza Guglielmo Oberdan 2A, Milano · Bistro 16-22€ · Directions

Historic Trattoria & Garden · Isola

Da Berti

Every serious list needs one address that was here before the lists. Da Berti has fed Milan since 1866, and its garden in Isola remains one of the city’s great summer dining rooms: white tablecloths under the trees, risotto and cotoletta done without irony, service that has seen every version of this city come and go. The skyscrapers of Porta Nuova now rise a few streets away, which only sharpens the pleasure. Some things in Milan are new. This one is right.

Via Francesco Algarotti 22, Milano · Directions

How to use this list

Do not try to do it in one night. The addresses run north to far south, and the point of each is the hour you give it, not the collection. Pair one courtyard with one canal: LOM or Cascina Nascosta at aperitivo, then Erba Brusca or Motelombroso when the light goes long. Book the gardens ahead in July. And arrive by bicycle at least once, because half of these places were built for exactly that entrance.

Luxury.it perspective

Milan’s summer luxury is not on its rooftops. It is behind its gates. The city that invented the aperitivo has spent a decade quietly converting its cascine, courtyards and canal banks into the most civilised outdoor season in Europe, and it has done it at prices that would make a Riviera beach club blush. The visitors chase the skyline. The Milanese sit under a vine. This list is an argument for sitting under the vine.
