Resort Cala di Falco in Cannigione is extending its 2026 season into late October.
That leaves north-eastern Sardinia with a bookable hotel, residence and villa base well after the August circuit begins to close.
The resort’s website says 26 October. Italian travel-trade reports say 25 October, or simply “until the end of October”. Anyone planning the final weekend should confirm the exact last night in the live booking system, though the substance is not in doubt: Cala di Falco runs well beyond the traditional Costa Smeralda peak.
Delphina Hotels & Resorts puts the extension down to demand for slower September and October stays, mostly from international guests who come for private boat trips, food, archaeology and the outdoors rather than for the August calendar.
Cannigione works differently from Porto Cervo
Cannigione sits on the Gulf of Arzachena, just outside the formal Costa Smeralda boundary. The resort puts Olbia airport and the port at about 30 minutes by road in normal conditions.
A marina, and shops that stay open all year. In late season that matters more than almost anything else, because a hotel surrounded by businesses that exist only for July and August becomes an island by the second week of October.
Porto Cervo, Cala di Volpe and the principal bays stay reachable by road or boat. Cannigione simply does not try to reproduce their summer, which is what makes it work as a base in September and October.
A quiet stay works only when the ordinary things still work. Groceries, a pharmacy, the marina, somewhere casual to eat, transport that runs. Cannigione has more of that year-round structure than most small resort settlements on this coast.
Hotel, residence and villa stays solve different late-season trips
Three formats: the hotel, the Residence La Rotonda and a collection of villas. The hotel is the simplest serviced stay, the residence gives independence, and the villas are built for families or groups who want private living space and no fixed daily schedule.
Not every category will be open on every October date. The seasonal announcement covers all three formats, while individual units, restaurants and services can run on narrower calendars.
So confirm the exact product, not just that the resort is open. A villa without the full restaurant programme is a completely different holiday from a hotel room on half board with every public facility running.
The first beach is directly across the road
Cannigione’s public beach sits opposite the resort, a few steps from the pool. There is also a shuttle to the public beach at Mannena, further up the coast.
Which means not every beach day becomes a drive. Useful for families, for residence guests, and for anyone splitting the week between swimming, short drives and boats.
Late September and October ask for different expectations. Beach facilities, lifeguards, shuttles and outside operators all move to reduced timetables while the sand itself stays publicly open, so ask the resort which services are running on your dates.
Beach rules do not follow one Sardinia-wide calendar
There is no single Sardinian system. Some beaches stay freely accessible. Others run municipal quotas, environmental contributions or guided-access rules for part of the year.
For an itinerary extending south of Olbia, Holiday.it has a guide to which Sardinian beaches now require advance booking. The operational point remains relevant after August because Cala Brandinchi and Lu Impostu keep compulsory reservations in force through 30 September.
The official San Teodoro platform opens availability for the second following day at 6pm, and warns against unofficial booking sites. Check a September beach plan municipality by municipality: the access controls do not all stop on 31 August.
The strongest late-season argument may be the boat
Trade reporting points to growing demand for private RIBs and skippered boats running from north Sardinia towards the Costa Smeralda bays, La Maddalena National Park and southern Corsica.
Cala di Falco runs regular departures from Cannigione marina towards the La Maddalena Archipelago, with other excursions open to Delphina guests. That marina is the property’s best asset, because it lets the week move past the beach across the road.
October boating is conditional in a way August is not. Wind, sea state, daylight and operator schedules can redraw the route or cancel it outright, so confirm the boat is running, that the skipper is happy with the crossing, and what happens to your money if it is called off.
Plan the Gulf of Arzachena or the nearer bays. Treat Bonifacio and the outer archipelago as a bonus.
Late season removes part of the scene
An October stay is not August at a discount.
Seasonal restaurants, boutiques, beach clubs and hotel venues cut their hours or shut. The marina goes quiet. The concentration of people that defines August disperses within days.
For some that removes the point. For others it is the whole point.

Olbia access still needs planning
Thirty minutes from Olbia only helps when the flights line up.
Delphina ties the longer seasons to better air connections through Olbia and Alghero, and individual routes still thin out as autumn goes on. Book the flights before you commit to a non-refundable villa.
A private transfer is cleanest for a short stay. Take a hire car if the plan includes beaches south of Olbia, inland Gallura, the archaeological sites or restaurants beyond Cannigione.
Who the extended season suits
- Couples who value the coast more than the August restaurant and club circuit.
- Families wanting residence or villa space, provided school dates and reduced seasonal services work.
- Yacht clients adding several nights ashore before or after a charter.
- Repeat Sardinia travellers who already know the principal Costa Smeralda addresses and want a slower base.
- Guests combining land and sea rather than expecting a full week on one managed beach.
What to confirm before booking
- the precise final operating night for the chosen accommodation;
- which restaurants and bars remain open;
- whether half-board or other meal plans continue;
- the Mannena shuttle schedule;
- boat and excursion availability;
- the status of beach facilities near the resort;
- flight frequency and airport transfers;
- the cancellation policy for weather-dependent activities.

Cala di Falco’s extension is useful because it gives north-eastern Sardinia a practical address after the coast stops performing at full summer volume.
Cannigione will not reproduce August in October, and it should not try. Its value lies in the marina, the nearby beach, year-round services and access to several versions of northern Sardinia without requiring the guest to live inside Porto Cervo’s seasonal rhythm.
The better late-season stay accepts what has closed and uses what remains.
