Casa METT Sitges: Barcelona’s Beach Town Gets Its Private Five-Star Moment

By The Openings DeskJuly 18, 20264 min read

Sitges has always been too interesting to be treated as a side trip.

That is the first mistake many travellers make. They see it as a pretty coastal escape from Barcelona: a train ride, a beach, a lunch, perhaps a long evening if the mood is right. That version is pleasant enough. It is also incomplete.

Sitges has always carried something more specific: old villas, art, nightlife, tolerance, summer houses, film culture, Mediterranean ease and a social code that is more layered than a simple beach town should be allowed to have.

Casa METT Sitges opened on 1 July 2026, inside five restored nineteenth-century Noucentista villas only about 100 metres from the Mediterranean coast. The project transforms the former Hotel Capri into a 38-room and suite five-star address, marking the first boutique expression of Sunset Hospitality Group‘s Casa METT brand.

This is not another Barcelona hotel. It is a sign that the Catalan coast is getting more precise.

Why Sitges makes sense now

Barcelona luxury is becoming crowded.

The city has the hotels, the restaurants, the shopping, the design, the architecture and the airport. But a certain kind of traveller no longer wants to be inside the city for every hour of the stay. They want access to Barcelona without Barcelona owning the entire trip.

Sitges solves that well. It gives sea, town, walking scale, restaurants, nightlife, history and a different emotional temperature. It is close enough to Barcelona to work, but far enough to feel like a decision rather than a neighbourhood.

Casa METT’s positioning is clever because it does not try to turn Sitges into a resort strip. The official hotel language focuses on a relaxed five-star coastal stay, 38 rooms and suites, Isola restaurant and El Bar de Lola, with the hotel placed in the historic centre near the Mediterranean.

The strongest coastal hotels do not isolate the guest from the town. They let the town do some of the work.

Five villas are better than one big statement

The structure matters.

A normal new-build hotel could have made Sitges feel cheaper. Five historic villas create a different rhythm: more residential, more village-like, less like a block of hospitality inventory dropped near the sea.

Hosteltur reports that Casa METT Sitges occupies five historic nineteenth-century villas considered part of the town’s architectural and cultural heritage, with the project following an acquisition and repositioning by AX Partners.

That is the difference between a hotel that simply opens in a destination and a hotel that can belong to it. Sitges does not need a loud imported lifestyle concept. It needs a hotel that understands that the town already has personality. The job is not to manufacture atmosphere. It is to avoid flattening the atmosphere that exists.

The Barcelona alternative

Casa METT Sitges will be most useful for travellers who like Barcelona but do not want to sleep in the city every night.

A three-night Barcelona stay followed by two nights in Sitges suddenly becomes a smarter Catalan itinerary. Or the reverse: arrive on the coast, relax, then enter Barcelona for the cultural part of the trip. For families, couples and repeat Spain travellers, this can feel less obvious than the usual Madrid, Barcelona and Mallorca triangle.

The hotel also gives Sitges a stronger high-end argument without requiring the town to become Ibiza, Marbella or Saint-Tropez. That is important. Sitges should not imitate louder destinations. Its advantage is that it can be social without being desperate, coastal without being empty, and refined without becoming stiff.

Who walks to the sea at seven

Casa METT Sitges is not for someone who wants a hidden retreat with no town life.

It is for travellers who want a walkable coastal base with design, restaurants, beach access and Barcelona nearby. It suits couples, creative travellers, small groups, long weekends, and people who want Spain’s Mediterranean coast without the more obvious Balearic commitment, an argument Mallorca’s west coast is making in its own way.

It is also a good address for people who understand that luxury is not always the most secluded place. Sometimes it is the place where you can leave the room at 7 p.m., walk to the sea, eat properly, drink late, and return without making the evening a logistics exercise.

Luxury.it perspective

Casa METT Sitges matters because it makes a quieter point about Mediterranean luxury. Not every beach-town hotel has to be a resort. Not every Barcelona trip has to stay in Barcelona. Not every Spanish summer decision has to become Ibiza or Mallorca. Sitges has always had the ingredients. Casa METT gives it a more serious room key.
