In Italy the beach club is the destination.
The Italian sea day is an institution with its own dress code and choreography, arrive by eleven, swim, spritz, a lunch that outlasts the afternoon, and the beach club is its theater. The famous ones are harder to book than the hotels around them, and worth every maneuver.
Formats differ by coast, rock platforms and ladders into deep blue at Capri and Portofino, cabanas on powder sand in Versilia and Sardinia. Both schools take their kitchens as seriously as their sunbeds.

In July and August the front row at these clubs allocates weeks ahead, with regulars holding the same beds for decades. Arrive by boat where the club has a jetty, La Fontelina and Il Riccio were designed for it, and book lunch at the moment you book the daybed, they are separate ledgers.
