Above Lana, at 1,500 metres, Vigilius Mountain Resort is one of South Tyrol’s 11 Key hotels beyond the Dolomites. MICHELIN’s 2026 selection gives Merano and its valleys, the Wine Road, the hills around Bolzano and the Isarco side 11 hotels, two at Two Keys and nine at One. Both Two-Key hotels are in Merano, Castel Fragsburg and Villa Eden The Private Retreat, while two names are new, both at One Key: Berghoferin Fine Hotel & Hideaway at Redagno and Ansitz Steinbock at Villandro. The other nine keep the tiers they held in 2025, so the list grows from nine to 11. Together the 11 have 332 rooms, by our count. All are in the province of Bolzano. The Key hotels of the Dolomite resorts, from Val Gardena to Cortina, will follow in a separate guide, and Riva del Garda and Arco are in our list for Lake Garda. The tiers come from MICHELIN’s complete list of the Italian Keys, published in Italian on 18 September.

Merano is one of five Italian towns with exactly two Two-Key hotels, with Savelletri di Fasano, Sorrento, Taormina and Venice. Only Milan, Rome and Florence have more. SEELEITEN, on Lake Caldaro, is the largest of the 11, with 71 rooms, and Terra, at Sarentino, the smallest, with ten.
Merano: Castel Fragsburg and Villa Eden at Two Keys
Castel Fragsburg, at Via Fragsburg 3 above Merano, has 20 suites. “It’s located inside an elegant hunting lodge that first opened its doors nearly four centuries ago”, MICHELIN writes. “The castle now serves as a thoroughly unique events venue for hotel guests”, the page adds. The Alchemistic Healing Spa works with Tyrolean flowers, there is an outdoor pool, and the restaurant, Prezioso, holds a MICHELIN Star. “Here you’ll be having the Breakfast Royale”, the inspectors promise. The season is short. “Castel Fragsburg is open annually April through October”, the page notes, so it reopens in April 2027.
Villa Eden The Private Retreat, at Via Winkel 68, has 25 suites, and its MICHELIN page now calls it Villa Eden The Longevity Retreat. “Its setting, in an ornate Art Nouveau villa, feels like something out of a fairy tale”, MICHELIN writes, but “its spa is no mere massage operation, but an intensively health-focused medical establishment”, with longevity programmes, an indoor pool and a seasonal outdoor one. The Eden’s Park restaurant “serves artfully prepared dishes crafted from traditional Tyrolean ingredients”, with “an unusual variety of vegetarian, vegan, or detox options”. Guests under 14 are not admitted. Both Merano hotels appear among the places to stay in our guide to the Merano WineFestival, which runs from 6 to 10 November at the Kurhaus.
Above Merano: Vigilius, San Luis and Goldene Rose Karthaus
“Vigilius Mountain Resort is set on Mount San Vigilio, at an altitude of 1,500 metres”, above Lana, and its address is the San Vigilio cable car. “The design of the resort itself is strikingly modern”, MICHELIN writes, and “every room has a terrace with a view of either the Dolomites or Val d’Ultimo”. It has 41 rooms and an indoor pool. There are two restaurants, Restaurant 1500 and the Stube Ida, and “a full service spa, offering the local specialty, which happens to be a hay bath”.
At Avelengo, on the plateau above Merano, San Luis Retreat Hotel & Lodges “feels more like a forest clearing than a resort”, in MICHELIN’s words. It stands in a 40-hectare Alpine reserve. The resort is “built around a still, mirror-like lake”, and its wooden chalets and treehouses are “crafted from moon-phase harvested timber” and “spaced for privacy”. “The Clubhouse anchors it all, with a restaurant, spa, and a pool that flows toward the lake”, the page adds. In the Val Senales, Goldene Rose Karthaus is “from the outside, an immaculately well-kept Tyrolean inn”. Inside are 29 rooms. There is the Glacisse spa, an open-air sauna complex and a choice of pools. “It’s as cozy as you want an Alpine lodge to be, but never cloying or claustrophobic”, the inspectors write, and “the penthouse and junior suites even have in-room saunas”.
Around Bolzano: ADLER Lodge Ritten, Terra and Ansitz Steinbock
On the Renon plateau, ADLER Lodge Ritten “occupies a wooded Alpine glade just outside Bolzano”, at Soprabolzano, with 44 lodge suites and chalets and “the all-season infinity pool and the extensive wellness complex”. It sells only all-inclusive stays, with full board and drinks. “Not far from the hotel runs the Renon train”, the page notes. Up the Sarentino valley, Terra, The Magic Place has ten rooms and a restaurant with two MICHELIN Stars. “The hotel, too, is memorable, a modernist interpretation of Tyrolean chalet architecture”, MICHELIN writes.
Ansitz Steinbock, new at One Key, is in “the mountain village of Villandro, or Villanders, not far from Bolzano”. “Ansitz Steinbock comes by its stone walls honestly”, the page says. “This sturdy structure’s foundations were laid in the 13th century.” It has 12 rooms, a sauna and a wine cellar, and “the cuisine in the eponymous fine dining restaurant is pure South Tyrol”.
The Wine Road and the Pusteria side: SEELEITEN, Berghoferin and Milla Montis
“There’s nothing that catches the eye of a mountain-hotel aficionado quite like an Italian hotel with a German name”, MICHELIN writes of Lake Spa Hotel SEELEITEN, at Strada del Vino 30 in Caldaro. It is “set by the side of Lake Caldaro, in a spectacular wine-producing valley”, with 71 rooms, three pools, one of them a lake-like water world with a sandy beach, and wines from its own winery. “Those vineyards in the middle distance aren’t just for show”, the page notes.
Berghoferin Fine Hotel & Hideaway, at Redagno di Sopra, is new at One Key: “Built in the 1960s and adapted in 2022, this 13-suite hideaway in the South Tyrolean hills” takes a maximum of 26 guests at a time. “The spa was carved from the old basement garage”, MICHELIN writes. “Dinner rotates nightly between the smoking room, the book-lined snug, and the stübli”, the page adds. At Maranza, above the Val Pusteria, Milla Montis was designed by the architect Peter Pichler, with “its asymmetrical rooflines, its slate-gray larch cladding, and the swooping, organic curves of its façade”. “Design aside, however, Milla Montis is an absolutely classic Tyrolean lodge”, with 25 rooms, a spa and a sauna. Children are not admitted.
The Luxury.it perspective
South Tyrol beyond the Dolomites is a list of small houses in big settings. Seven of the 11 have 30 rooms or fewer, the two newcomers among them, and the range runs from a medical spa in an Art Nouveau villa to treehouses by a mountain lake and a 13th-century house above the Isarco. Merano is the centre, with two Two-Key hotels and three more Key hotels in the valleys around it. The calendar matters here. Castel Fragsburg closes for the winter after October, the WineFestival fills the Kurhaus from 6 November, and the ski resorts of the Dolomites open in December. For the rest of Italy’s second tier, the 49 Two-Key hotels are in our national list.
