Michelin Keys 2026 Swiss Alps: all 46 ski hotels, from St. Moritz to Zermatt

By Alessandro ContiOctober 28, 20268 min readOpenings Desk

Kulm Hotel St. Moritz, which dates back to 1856, opens on 4 December with Three MICHELIN Keys. It is one of four Three-Key hotels in the Swiss ski resorts, with Badrutt’s Palace Hotel and the Carlton in St. Moritz and The Alpina in Gstaad. By our count, MICHELIN’s 2026 list for Switzerland has 46 Key hotels in 21 ski resorts and mountain villages: four at Three Keys, 15 at Two and 27 at One. Zermatt has nine. St. Moritz has six, and Gstaad and Crans-Montana five each. The Kulm moves up to Three Keys this year, Six Senses Crans-Montana enters at Two, and Miiro The Mansard in Gstaad and Hotel Welschen in Zermatt enter at One. The 45 hotels whose pages give a room count have 2,975 rooms between them. The tiers come from MICHELIN’s 2026 list for Switzerland, published in German on 18 September; its English page still shows the 2025 selection. The other 43 Swiss Key hotels are in the cities, on the lakes or in spa towns.

The Valais has 17 of the 46 and the Engadin eight. Twelve can only be reached without a car, in Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Mürren and on the Frutt plateau. The largest is the Kempinski Grand Hotel Des Bains in St. Moritz, with 205 rooms, and the smallest is Au Club Alpin at Champex-Lac, with eight.

St. Moritz, Pontresina and the Engadin: three Three-Key palaces

St. Moritz holds three of Switzerland’s ten Three-Key hotels. “There are other luxury hotels in St. Moritz, but the Kulm can credibly claim to be the original”, MICHELIN writes, noting that it was the first. Its 150 rooms sit behind “the imposing colonnaded lobby with its grand marble staircase”. The winter season runs from 4 December 2026 to 29 March 2027, according to the hotel. Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, at Via Serlas 27, is “a castle, high on the hills, where the beautiful people converge for the après ski”, with 157 rooms, a spa, an indoor pool, a kids’ club and La Coupole Matsuhisa among its restaurants. The Carlton is the smallest of the three, with 60 suites. “It takes a lot to compete with the view of the lake, shared by all of the suites”, MICHELIN notes, and the spa covers more than ten thousand square feet; the hotel opens from 11 December to 21 March.

Suvretta House, at Two Keys, is the largest of the Two-Key ski hotels, with 177 rooms. “Icing on the cake: the hotel has a private ski lift just for guests”, the inspectors note. It opened in 1912 and keeps an ice rink and “a richly decorated dining room where even children are required to dress for dinner”. At One Key, the Kempinski Grand Hotel Des Bains “first opened its doors to European high society in 1864” around a mineral spring, and a gondola station stands across the street. Grace La Margna St. Moritz is a two-minute walk from the station, with 74 rooms and an indoor pool.

Pontresina is a few minutes away. There, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof has 112 rooms, a natural ice rink in winter and interiors “full of finely rendered Swiss pine paneling and delicate ornamentation”. In the Lower Engadine, IN LAIN Hotel Cadonau at Brail has 14 rooms, a natural swimming pool and breakfast “in the old hay barn or on your own private terrace”. The Engadin’s winter calendar, from snow polo to the White Turf races, is in our guide to St. Moritz and Gstaad in 2027.

Zermatt, Saas-Fee, Crans-Montana and Verbier: the Valais

Zermatt has nine Key hotels, more than any other Swiss town. Two hold Two Keys. CERVO Mountain Resort has 54 rooms and suites, seven outlying lodges and the Atman Mountain Spa, with “yoga, meditation, and Japanese-style onsen baths”. At Matterhorn FOCUS, a lift goes straight to the Matterhorn Express, and almost every room has a balcony facing Zermatt or the Matterhorn. The seven at One Key run from the grand hotels to the boutique houses. The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof “has been here since 1879”, and Mont Cervin Palace, with 132 rooms, opens “end of November to end of April”. At The Omnia, “guests enter through a tunnel in the rock and ride an elevator up to the lobby”. Hotel Welschen, new this year, grew “from 14 to 29 rooms” with a 600-square-metre spa, and the Sunnegga lift station is steps away. 22 SUMMITS, Backstage Hotel Vernissage, with a cinema of its own, and Boutique Hotel Matthiol, which serves fondue “in private igloos that seat four”, complete the list.

In car-free Saas-Fee, The Capra has a couple of dozen suites at Two Keys: “Snow globes rather than glow snobs, if you will”. Crans-Montana has four Two-Key hotels, the most of any Swiss town at that tier. The new one, Six Senses Crans-Montana, has 78 rooms, ski-in and ski-out access to the Cry d’Er gondola and indoor and outdoor pools. “Even by the standard of Swiss Alpine luxury resorts, Six Senses Crans-Montana is remarkable”, MICHELIN writes. Guarda Golf Hotel & Residences “sits right on its picturesque fairway”, Hostellerie du Pas de l’Ours has 15 rooms and a Starred restaurant, L’Ours, and LeCrans, also with 15, names each room after a peak and stays open year-round. The fifth, Aïda Hôtel & Spa, holds One Key. It takes adults only.

In Verbier, Cordée des Alpes sits in the 4 Vallées ski area, and every room has “a private timber balcony facing the snowy mountains”. Au Club Alpin, at Champex-Lac, has eight rooms by a lake “at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif”.

Gstaad, Rougemont, Adelboden, the Jungfrau and Villars

Gstaad has five. “The Alpina Gstaad dates back only to 2012”, MICHELIN notes, “though its classic Alpine façade could pass for fifty or a hundred years older”. It has 54 rooms, a Six Senses spa and five restaurants. Gstaad Palace, at Two Keys, is a turreted building with 90 rooms, a spa wall cut from fifty tons of local granite and a winter season from 15 December to 7 March. Le Grand Bellevue, with 57 rooms, is “one of the original Big Four luxury hotels in town”. The new One-Key name is Miiro The Mansard, which “opened in Gstaad as a contemporary alternative to the town’s grand five-star palaces”, with 29 rooms and a rooftop restaurant. Ultima Gstaad has 17 rooms, “well away from the fuss and frills of the jet set”. Nearby, Hotel de Rougemont & Spa is “one part classic Alpine lodge, one part jet-set design hotel”.

Adelboden has two One-Key hotels. The Brecon has 22 rooms, a guests-only spa with a rooftop pool and an all-inclusive policy on food and drink, and The Cambrian, with 71, has indoor and outdoor pools. In Grindelwald, Bergwelt Grindelwald “sits right in the middle of the action”, and at Boutique Hotel Glacier “the best rooms have private wooden decks with outdoor hot tubs”. In Mürren, at the Eiger hotel, “There isn’t even a road in”. “The ski trails pass right by the hotel”, MICHELIN adds. In the Vaud Alps, Villars-sur-Ollon has Villars Palace, open since 1913, and Chalet RoyAlp Hotel & Spa.

Arosa, Vals, Andermatt, Davos, Klosters and Engelberg

The Chedi Andermatt has 105 rooms and suites. Its Japanese Restaurant “has earned two MICHELIN Stars”, as the hotel’s MICHELIN page puts it, and it is in Andermatt that MICHELIN presents its 2027 Swiss restaurant selection, on 2 November. In Arosa, the Tschuggen Grand Hotel has 130 rooms and a spa by Mario Botta, and “La Brezza, with its two MICHELIN Stars, is a destination unto itself”. The Valsana Hotel Arosa is the smaller of the two. It has 40 rooms, with record players in them: “Trust the Swiss to be at the very forefront of the high-luxury, high-design ski-hotel world”. At Vals, 7132 Hotel has 22 rooms by Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Thom Mayne and Peter Zumthor, beside Zumthor’s thermal baths.

The rest hold One Key. They are spread wide. AMERON Davos has 148 rooms and Hotel Piz Buin Klosters, beside the Landquart river, 53, while Kempinski Palace Engelberg has 129 rooms behind “its Belle Époque façade” and “a rooftop spa crowned by a glass-walled infinity pool”. Frutt Mountain Resort stands on a “wide-open, car-free site on the high plateau” of Melchsee-Frutt, reached by gondola in winter, with a 900-square-metre spa.

The Luxury.it perspective

Switzerland’s ski list is the grand hotel at its strongest. Four palaces hold Three Keys, three of them in St. Moritz, and the One-Key tier is full of grand hotels too, from the Des Bains to the Zermatterhof. The newcomers point the other way: a Six Senses at the gondola in Crans-Montana, a contemporary house in Gstaad and a rebuilt boutique hotel by the Sunnegga lift. The seasons are short and fixed. The Kulm opens on 4 December, the Carlton on 11 December and Gstaad Palace on 15 December, as in our guide to the Alpine palace openings. Book early. For the French side of the Alps, the 22 Key hotels from Courchevel to Chamonix are in our French Alps list.
