Hamburg’s Historic Christmas Market on the Rathausmarkt opens on 23 November 2026 and runs to 23 December. Two other central markets open five days earlier, on 18 November: the Weißer Zauber market on the Jungfernstieg and the Christmas market on the Gänsemarkt. All three close on 23 December, according to the city’s official site, the organisers and the Hamburg tourist board. Below are the dates and hours of each, the open-air rink in Planten un Blomen, and the city’s five MICHELIN Key hotels for 2026, among them the Vier Jahreszeiten on the Inner Alster, beside the Jungfernstieg.

The Historic Christmas Market stands in front of the town hall, and its organisers, the city and the tourist board all give the same dates and the same hours, every day from 11:00 to 21:00. The Weißer Zauber market runs along the Jungfernstieg by the water. It stays open until 22:00 on Fridays and Saturdays, and it closes on Sunday 22 November for a silent public holiday. The tourist board lists the Gänsemarkt market with the same dates as the Jungfernstieg, daily from 11:00 to 21:00. None of the three opens on Christmas Eve. For skating, the EisArena in Planten un Blomen, at Holstenwall 30, has been open since 22 October, with 4,300 square metres of ice, from 10:00 to 22:00.
Where to stay: Hamburg’s five MICHELIN Key hotels
Hamburg’s five MICHELIN Key hotels for 2026 are the same five as in 2025, at the same tiers, according to MICHELIN’s 2026 list for Germany. Two of them are among Germany’s six Three-Key hotels. Room counts come from the header of each hotel’s MICHELIN page.
| Keys | Hotel | Address | Rooms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three | Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten | Neuer Jungfernstieg 9-14 | 156 |
| Three | The Fontenay | Fontenay 10 | 130 |
| Two | Hotel Louis C. Jacob | Elbchaussee 401-403 | 85 |
| One | Landhaus Flottbek Boutique Hotel | Baron-Voght-Str. 179 | 26 |
| One | Tortue Hamburg | Stadthausbrücke 10 | 128 |
“This impressive edifice has set the standard for luxury-hotel elegance in Hamburg since the late 19th century”, MICHELIN writes of the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten, and “The location couldn’t get much better: it’s on the shores of the Inner Alster Lake, on the waterfront that is Hamburg’s toniest district”. It has 156 rooms. “There’s a capacious spa and a typically well-equipped fitness center”. The Fontenay stands on the shore of the outer Alster, within walking distance of the Kunsthalle and the Bucerius Kunstforum, and its architect, Jan Störmer, called it his “Hotel in the Park”. “Meanwhile, the 1,022-square-meter rooftop spa feels like a destination unto itself”, with an indoor-outdoor pool, the only pool among the five.
Hotel Louis C. Jacob “starts with a lovely pair of buildings, one on each side of the Elbchaussee”, which MICHELIN calls “the picturesque riverside drive to the west of the city proper”. Inside, “the hotel’s 19th-century Hanseatic elegance remains in full flower”, and “its collection of artworks alone would be enough for a small museum”. Further west, Landhaus Flottbek occupies a farmhouse complex some 200 years old, and it “is a mere 15 minutes via the S-Bahn from the bustling port city, and yet it feels a world apart”. Its 26 rooms come in four styles, from cottage and barn to Scandinavian modern. Tortue Hamburg, at Stadthausbrücke 10, has 128 rooms, “a magnificent courtyard, as well as the bars, which are a popular spot for hip after-work parties”.
Haerlin, Lakeside and HYGGE: the tables to book in December
Restaurant Haerlin, inside the Vier Jahreszeiten, holds Three MICHELIN Stars with the chef Christoph Rüffer, and it opens for dinner from Tuesday to Saturday. Lakeside, at The Fontenay, holds Two MICHELIN Stars with the chef Julian Stowasser, also from Tuesday to Saturday. HYGGE Brasserie & Bar at Landhaus Flottbek holds a Bib Gourmand, MICHELIN’s mark for good food at good value, and opens every day from 16:00. At the Louis C. Jacob, Jacobs Restaurant and the wine bistro Kleines Jacob are both in MICHELIN’s 2026 selection. Book the starred tables first, above all for market weekends.
The Luxury.it perspective
For a December weekend, stay on the Alster. The Vier Jahreszeiten puts the Jungfernstieg market a few minutes away on foot, with the Rathausmarkt just beyond it, and Haerlin’s three Stars are in the same building. The Fontenay is the choice for a spa after the markets, with its rooftop spa and the only pool among the five. The Louis C. Jacob and Landhaus Flottbek suit a quieter stay towards the Elbe, with the centre a short ride away. Come from 18 November for two markets, or from 23 November for all three. For snow and spas further south, our guide to the 22 Key hotels of the Bavarian Alps has the Advent dates for Garmisch and Berchtesgaden.
