Michelin Keys 2026 Salzburg: all 5 hotels, from the Old Town to the Fuschlsee

By Camilla De SantisNovember 2, 20265 min readDestinations Desk

Salzburg’s archives first mention an inn on the site of Hotel Goldener Hirsch in 1407. It is one of five MICHELIN Key hotels in Salzburg and on the nearby Fuschlsee for 2026, the same five at the same tiers as in 2025. Rosewood Schloss Fuschl holds Three Keys and Schloss Mönchstein holds Two, while three hotels hold One: the Goldener Hirsch, Hotel Goldgasse and Hotel Sacher Salzburg. Together they have eight Keys and 318 rooms by our count. The tiers come from MICHELIN’s 2026 list for Austria, published in German on 18 September. The Christkindlmarkt opens on 19 November.

Five hotels from the Mönchsberg to the Fuschlsee: the Salzburg list

Addresses are those on each hotel’s MICHELIN page, and room counts come from the page headers.

Keys Hotel Address Rooms
Three Rosewood Schloss Fuschl Hof bei Salzburg, on the Fuschlsee 98
Two Schloss Mönchstein Mönchsberg 26 24
One Hotel Goldener Hirsch Getreidegasse 37 70
One Hotel Goldgasse Goldgasse 10 16
One Hotel Sacher Salzburg Schwarzstrasse 5-7 110

The Sacher is the largest, with 110 rooms, and the Goldgasse the smallest, with 16. Four of the five are in the city.

Three Keys: Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, a 15th-century castle on the lake

Rosewood Schloss Fuschl stands at Schloss-Straße 19 in Hof bei Salzburg, on the shore of the Fuschlsee, “less than half an hour by car from Salzburg”. MICHELIN notes that “the castle itself does date to the 15th century”, while the hotel around it has “some 98 rooms, suites, and freestanding chalets”, in a style MICHELIN calls “modern-luxe with plenty of historical character”. The spa comes with an indoor pool, an outdoor pool and a sauna, and “the leisure options make the most of this picturesque mountain lake”. On the table, “The restaurants show off Austria’s culinary traditions at their finest”. MICHELIN’s own list pictures the view from the castle across the lake and the wooded Salzkammergut.

Two Keys: Schloss Mönchstein and The Glass Garden, above the Old Town

Schloss Mönchstein is the hotel above the city. At Mönchsberg 26, “this medieval-meets-modern castle stands atop the Mönchsberg”, on a hilltop over the Old Town, and “Its 24 rooms and suites are similarly modern-classic in their style”. Its restaurant is the draw in winter. The Glass Garden holds one MICHELIN Star in the 2026 guide for Austria, in “a distinctive glass vault with an elegant interior”, with the chef Simon Wagner, who previously worked at Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau. It closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. MICHELIN also praises “the spa, with its small but lovely outdoor infinity pool”, which opens in summer only, according to the hotel, and the Mönchsberg lift down to the old centre is about ten minutes’ walk away.

One Key: the Goldener Hirsch, the Goldgasse and the Sacher on the Salzach

On the Getreidegasse, “Hotel Goldener Hirsch has existed in one form or another since 1407”, just down the road from Mozart’s birthplace. Its 70 rooms are “decorated in decades-old antiques, designed more in the style of a rustic lodge”, with beamed ceilings. They are compact. “Staffers are eminently personable, adding to the intimacy of the place”. “The restaurant serves upscale Austrian classics”, MICHELIN adds.

Hotel Goldgasse, at Goldgasse 10, has “A central Old Town location on the south bank of the Salzach”, “barely a stone’s throw from the university and the Baroque cathedral”. The cathedral’s squares are where the Christkindlmarkt stands. The building keeps classic stucco and antique stone floors, and its 16 rooms have details that “reflect the livelihood of the skilled coppersmiths who once ran a workshop here”, and “The best views accompany the suites, including one with a private rooftop terrace”. Downstairs, the Gasthof Goldgasse “preserves the essence of a traditional Austrian inn”.

Across the river, Hotel Sacher Salzburg, at Schwarzstrasse 5-7, occupies “a privileged position along the banks of the Salzach river”, and “it’s still resplendent in 19th-century pomp”. Of its 110 rooms, “Some have impressive views of the rooftops of the old town”. “Restaurants include the wood-paneled Zirbelzimmer, an Austrian fine-dining restaurant”, whose design MICHELIN calls “still straight out of 1866”, alongside “the more contemporary Sacher Grill and the warm and clubby Sacher Bar”. The Café Sacher Salzburg “is cut from the same cloth as its sister in Vienna”, the Three-Key Hotel Sacher Wien of our Vienna guide. There is a spa with a sauna and a gym.

Advent 2026: the Christkindlmarkt, Hellbrunn and Oberndorf

The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 on the Domplatz and the Residenzplatz, according to its organisers. It opens at 10:00 on 19 November, and the tree is lit from 18:00 that evening. Hours run from 10:00 to 20:30 from Monday to Thursday, to 21:00 on Fridays and from 09:00 at weekends, with 09:00 to 15:00 on 24 December and 11:00 to 18:00 on Christmas Day and 26 December. On Thursdays and Saturdays at 18:30, brass players perform from the towers on the Residenzplatz. South of the city, the Hellbrunner Adventzauber at Schloss Hellbrunn runs from 19 November to 24 December, from Tuesday to Sunday, and it is closed on Mondays except 21 December. Silent Night “was first performed on December 24, 1818 at St. Nicholas’ Church in Oberndorf near Salzburg”, and every year on 24 December at 17:00 a commemoration is held at the Silent Night Chapel in Oberndorf.

The Luxury.it perspective

Salzburg’s list is short and stable. The choice is between the castle on the lake and four city addresses. Schloss Fuschl suits a winter stay with a pool and a view, half an hour from the markets. In town, the Goldgasse and the Goldener Hirsch put the Old Town lanes outside the door, the Sacher looks across the Salzach, and Mönchstein sits above it all with the only Starred restaurant of the five. Book The Glass Garden for a day it is open, from Thursday to Monday. For a second Advent stop, our Munich guide covers 11 Key hotels across the German border.
