The Japanese Restaurant at The Chedi Andermatt has won a third MICHELIN Star, Andermatt’s first Three-Star table. MICHELIN published its 2026 selection for Switzerland on 2 November, after a ceremony at the Andermatt Konzerthalle, and the release from its newsroom calls the restaurant the biggest climber of the edition, from two Stars to three. Seven more restaurants won their first Star, in Bern, Gonten, Lucerne, Morbio Inferiore, Oberwil, Zermatt and Zurich. Four special awards went to a sommelier, a front-of-house manager, a young chef and the opening of the year. Switzerland now has five Three-Star restaurants. The guide calls this edition 2026.
Andermatt’s first Three-Star: twin brothers at The Chedi
The restaurant sits “In the sleek and chic restaurant of the luxury hotel The Chedi, at almost 1 500m above sea level”, according to its MICHELIN page, where “twin brothers Fabio Toffolon and Dominik Sato share the helm in the kitchen”. The cooking is listed as Japanese contemporary and fusion, and MICHELIN’s release says the brothers combine Japanese influences with classic techniques, using carefully chosen ingredients. The address is Gotthardstrasse 4. The hotel holds Two MICHELIN Keys. With the new Star, the small municipality in the canton of Uri counts four starred restaurants across all three categories, the release adds. The restaurant on the Gütsch, above the village, is a separate address.
The Japanese Restaurant joins the four Swiss Three-Star restaurants that keep their rank: Memories at the Grand Resort Bad Ragaz, with Sven Wassmer and his team; Cheval Blanc by Peter Knogl in Basel; the Restaurant de l’Hôtel de Ville in Crissier, where Franck Giovannini runs the kitchen; and Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau, with Andreas Caminada and Marcel Skibba.
Seven new One-Star restaurants, from Bern to Zermatt
MICHELIN names seven restaurants with a first Star for 2026.
- MYLE, Bern, with Markus Arnold.
- Bärenstobe, Gonten, in Appenzell Innerrhoden, where Michael Gollenz cooks a modern menu with regional and international accents.
- CAAA by Pietro Catalano, Lucerne, a modern kitchen with Italian and regional influences in an artful setting.
- Ristorante con enoteca Origini, Morbio Inferiore, in Ticino, with Guglielmo Curcio.
- Schlüssel, Oberwil, in Basel-Landschaft.
- ad lib, Zermatt, in Valais.
- rémy, Zurich.
The list has a self-taught chef. Pietro Catalano trained as a car mechanic and studied classical trumpet at the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts before turning to the kitchen, according to the release. The new Stars, with Andermatt’s third, reach eight cantons.
Four awards: service, sommellerie, a young chef and the opening of the year
The MICHELIN Opening of the Year goes to MYLE in Bern, which MICHELIN describes as a relaxed address in a former 1970s cinema, rebuilt around a large open kitchen with a Molteni range. Markus Arnold cooks what he calls a cuisine voyage, devoting each changing menu to a different culinary destination. Mexico City runs until the end of November, and Athens follows from December.
The Young Chef Award goes to Guglielmo Curcio of Origini, born in 1994 in the Mendrisiotto, whose passion for fermentation and wild herbs gives his dishes their aromatic signature, in MICHELIN’s description. The Service Award goes to Nicole Sawyere of ad lib in Zermatt, the small restaurant of the One-Key Hotel Welschen, with a view of the Matterhorn, and the inspectors describe her service as warm and attentive. The Sommelier Award goes to Émeline Gigaud, head sommelier and restaurant manager since September 2025 at Arakel in Geneva, a One-Star restaurant whose wine list runs to about 1,500 references, with Burgundy and Krug Champagne among its strengths.
The 11 new Bib Gourmands and the full list
Three of the four awards went to restaurants that won their first Star this year: MYLE, Origini and ad lib. Ten days before the ceremony, MICHELIN had also announced 11 new Bib Gourmands. The full list is in the MICHELIN newsroom, on the guide’s website and in its app, which is free on iOS and Android.
The Luxury.it perspective
This is a mountain year. The headline Star went to a hotel restaurant in a ski resort, and the Service Award to a small dining room in Zermatt with the Matterhorn in view, so two of the edition’s headline names sit at altitude. For a winter trip, The Chedi Andermatt holds Two Keys and the Hotel Welschen One. In the cities, rémy in Zurich and CAAA in Lucerne are the new names, and the Hôtel de Ville in Crissier, which keeps its three Stars, is a short drive from the Lausanne hotels in our Lake Geneva guide. Book early for Andermatt. In ski season, a Three-Star table in a small resort tends to fill early.
