Fontevraud L’Ermitage puts its 54 rooms inside the Saint-Lazare priory of a 12th-century abbey. It is the largest of nine MICHELIN Key hotels between Blois and Nantes for 2026, our selection from MICHELIN’s complete list for France, published in French on 18 September, with the Château du Grand-Lucé as a detour north of Tours. Two hold Two Keys, Les Sources de Cheverny and the Château du Grand-Lucé, and seven hold One. Seven of the nine were on the 2025 list, all at the same tier. Two are new: Château Louise de La Vallière at Reugny and Maison Maubreuil in Nantes. Together they have 273 rooms by our count. No hotel in the area holds Three Keys. The châteaux begin their Christmas season on 28 November.

Two Keys: Les Sources de Cheverny and the Château du Grand-Lucé
“Surrounded by the forests and vineyards of the Loire Valley, Les Sources de Cheverny is a modern wine-country classic”, MICHELIN writes, and “a luxurious and memorable small hotel”. It has 49 rooms at 23 route de Fougères, and “There’s a pool, a Caudalie spa, and bikes available for exploring the countryside”. The pool is outdoor and seasonal. Its restaurant Le Favori holds one MICHELIN Star in the 2026 guide for France, with the chef Pierre Frindel, formerly at Les Sources de Caudalie, the estate that opens our Bordeaux to Biarritz guide. MICHELIN praises its “Spot-on cooking, elegant plating and a dining room turned towards the countryside”. Le Favori closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, and L’Auberge and a wine bar complete the estate.
North of Tours, the Château du Grand-Lucé is an 18th-century neoclassical house, built in 1760 according to the hotel, which “the relevant French authorities deemed” one of the country’s most significant. MICHELIN places it in the Loire valley, “less than an hour by train from Paris”, a short trip for guests of the capital’s Key hotels. It has “just 19 rooms, which doesn’t exactly entail Louvre-like foot traffic”. “The grounds feature gardens inspired by Versailles”, and “one of the outbuildings contains a very modern spa and fitness center”. The chef at Le Lucé, its restaurant, is Maxime Thomas.
Around Blois and Tours: Fleur de Loire, Les Hauts de Loire, the Lodges and Reugny
Fleur de Loire stands on the quay at Blois, “Sitting by the banks of the Loire in the historic city of Blois”, in “a grandiose 17th century former hospice”. “Along with a Sisley spa the Fleur contains 33 rooms and 11 suites”, and there is an indoor pool as well as a seasonal outdoor one. The restaurant Christophe Hay – Fleur de Loire holds Two MICHELIN Stars in the 2026 guide, the only Two-Star table among the nine, and its page says “Every plate is an ode to the Loire Valley”. A climate-controlled greenhouse keeps the kitchen supplied all year. The Two-Star table closes on Sundays and Mondays, while Amour Blanc is the second restaurant.
Upstream at Onzain, “Domaine des Hauts de Loire is one of the best classic French châteaux hotels”, “having been built as a hunting lodge in 1860”. “The hotel is surrounded by 180 acres of parkland”, with tennis courts, a seasonal pool and a spa. Its 36 rooms divide between the château, where “The château rooms are elegant, restrained, with a tasteful sprinkling of antiques”, and the carriage house, whose rooms are “bigger and more contemporary”. The hotel keeps “a large collection of the region’s wines”.
South-east of Tours, at Esvres-sur-Indre, MICHELIN opens with a reminder: “Not every Loire Valley hotel has to follow the wine-château model”. The Loire Valley Lodges are “21 treehouse-like lodges standing on stilts” among “the oaks, chestnuts, and Douglas firs of this 750-acre forest”, each signed by a contemporary artist, according to the hotel, with “a jacuzzi on each one’s terrace”. The hotel takes adults only. Reception and the restaurant, Ardent, share “the old stone barn”.
Château Louise de La Vallière at Reugny, north-east of Tours, is new to the list. It reopened as a hotel in 2022, according to MICHELIN, and “the interiors are museum-like, displaying precious tapestries and oil paintings”, “set amid rose gardens, orchards, and a park with 200-year-old trees”. It has 20 rooms and takes guests aged 14 and over. The spa, “with a heated pool, is also in a freestanding building”, and “Activities include champagne tastings, outdoor film screenings in the gardens”.
Fontevraud and Nantes: an abbey priory and the two Maubreuil addresses
Fontevraud is “One of the best-known abbey complexes in France”. The hotel is “Set on the sprawling 12th-century complex”, and its “Rooms are located in the Saint-Lazare priory”, “giving guests the ability to explore the grounds day or night, out of view of the crowds”. Its restaurant, designed by Patrick Jouin, holds one MICHELIN Star in the 2026 guide, with the chef Thibault Ruggeri, and closes on Mondays and Tuesdays. There is no spa or pool. For Christmas, the abbey opens every day from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, except 25 December and 1 January.
Near Nantes, the Château de Maubreuil at Carquefou has 17 travel-themed rooms and suites, and “The château and its grounds feel lost in time”, although “its location on the outskirts of Nantes means the bright lights of the city are always nearby”. “Hidden in the historic vaulted cellars is a Cinq Mondes spa”, and “Table du Marquis takes inspiration from the great Parisian brasseries”. Its pools open from May to September, and its website already sells a dinner for 31 December 2026. In the city, the new Maison Maubreuil is “The city sibling of the nearby Château de Maubreuil”. “Each of its 13 rooms and suites is devoted to a different style of art”, and “the hotel’s restaurants and bar are supported by the extravagantly well-supplied Maubreuil Cellar”. Guests must be 18 or over.
Christmas at the châteaux in 2026: the dates, and who opens on 25 December
In Touraine, “Noël au pays des châteaux” runs from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 at seven châteaux: Villandry, Amboise, Azay-le-Rideau, Chinon, Chenonceau, Langeais and Loches, according to the Touraine tourist board. Chenonceau’s theme is “Christmas and traditions around the world”, with evening visits on 23 and 30 December. At Chambord, “Noël à Chambord” runs from 28 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, with the show “Le Réveillon de Gargantua” from 19 December to 2 January. Christmas Day splits the valley. Cheverny says its estate is open 365 days a year, 25 December included, and Chenonceau opens every day of the year. Chambord, Amboise, Blois, the Clos Lucé and the abbey at Fontevraud close on 25 December and 1 January.
The Luxury.it perspective
The Loire list is a list of houses. Five are châteaux, and the others are an abbey priory, a 17th-century hospice on the Blois quay, a forest of lodges on stilts and a 13-room town house in Nantes. Three have a Starred table, led by Fleur de Loire’s two Stars, so for most of the nine the house itself is the reason to go. Winter needs one check. The tourist boards list Les Hauts de Loire, Château Louise de La Vallière and Fontevraud L’Ermitage as open until 31 December 2026, with no 2027 dates yet. Book Christmas, then ask about January. The next name on the river is a resort: Six Senses plans one in the Loire for 2027, as in our look at the brand’s openings.
