Munich’s Christkindlmarkt on the Marienplatz opens on Friday 20 November, and its Christmas tree is lit at 17:00. It runs to Christmas Eve with 138 stalls on the square and in the surrounding old town, according to muenchen.de, the city’s official portal. The Christmas village in the Kaiserhof of the Residenz opens earlier, on Monday 16 November. Tollwood follows at the Theresienwiese on 24 November, Schwabing on 25 November. For a place to stay, Munich has 11 MICHELIN Key hotels for 2026. Seven are in the old town. One stands on the Marienplatz itself.

Each date and hour comes from the city portal’s page for that market. Sunday 22 November is Totensonntag. The pages for the Marienplatz, the Residenz, Wittelsbacherplatz, Sendlinger Tor and Haidhausen all say their stalls stay shut that day. The Kripperlmarkt, the nativity-figure stalls by the Alter Peter, belongs to the Christkindlmarkt and keeps its hours. Entry to the Residenz village is free. The Chinese Tower gives no hours for Mondays and Tuesdays before 21 December. Two markets end on 22 December, the Residenz and Sendlinger Tor, and three on 23 December: Wittelsbacherplatz, the Chinese Tower and Tollwood.
Which markets stay open after Christmas, and the rink on Karlsplatz
Three markets open on Christmas Eve: the Marienplatz, Haidhausen and Schwabing. All three close at 14:00. The Winterzauber on the Viktualienmarkt goes further. Its page lists every day from 20 November to Tuesday 5 January 2027, with 25, 26 and 31 December among them, each from 10:00. Then there is the ice. Münchner Eiszauber covers Karlsplatz with 750 square metres of it from 13 November to Sunday 10 January 2027, daily from 10:30 to 22:00. Tollwood’s market is taken down after 23 December. The festival comes back to the Theresienwiese for a New Year’s Eve party, from 19:00 on 31 December.

BEYOND by Geisel is the one on the square, at Marienplatz 22, with 19 rooms for adults only and a shared living room with a library and an open-plan kitchen. Six of the 11 have a pool. At the Mandarin Oriental, MICHELIN picks out “the terrace on the roof with its garden and heated pool”, which looks towards the Alps. The Bayerischer Hof keeps its pool under a retractable glass roof, and the Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski has a glass-enclosed one on its roof. The Charles, the Rosewood and the Andaz have indoor pools. The Koenigshof stands on Karlsplatz, so the rink is outside the door. Hotel München Palace, in Bogenhausen, is the Key hotel nearest the Haidhausen market.
Munich’s Three-Star pair, JAN and Tohru, and five Two-Star tables
Munich has two Three-Star restaurants in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide Germany, five with Two Stars and eight with One. JAN, Jan Hartwig’s restaurant on Luisenstrasse in Maxvorstadt, is also No.19 in The 50 Best Restaurants 2026. In MICHELIN’s words, it “has firmly established itself among the world’s top-tier dining destinations”. The pages for The Charles and the Koenigshof both list it nearby. Tohru in der Schreiberei, Tohru Nakamura’s table on Burgstrasse, is reached by a steep wooden staircase of 23 steps in a historic town house, a few minutes from the Marienplatz. It opens from Tuesday to Saturday, in the evening.
The Two-Star tables are Alois – Dallmayr Fine Dining, Atelier, KOMU, Tantris and THE CLOUD by Käfer. Atelier is inside the Bayerischer Hof. Like Tohru, it closes on Sunday and Monday. Alois is on Dienerstrasse, by the Marienplatz, and KOMU a few minutes’ walk from the square. Tantris is in Schwabing, close to the Andaz, while THE CLOUD by Käfer looks out over BMW Welt by the Olympiapark. MICHELIN gives no holiday hours for 24 to 26 or 31 December, so those evenings are best booked directly with each restaurant.
The Luxury.it perspective
Stay in the old town. Seven of the 11 Key hotels are a short walk from the Marienplatz, and from the Rosewood or the Bayerischer Hof the medieval market on Wittelsbacherplatz is a few minutes away on foot. All nine markets in the table run between 25 November and 22 December. That is the window to aim for. Christmas Eve ends at 14:00, and after it the Viktualienmarkt and the rink on Karlsplatz carry the season into January. For dinner, Tohru and Atelier both open from Tuesday to Saturday, which leaves Sunday and Monday for the markets.
