Michelin Keys 2026 Austrian Alps: 44 ski and mountain hotels, Lech to Ischgl

By Alessandro ContiOctober 28, 20268 min readOpenings Desk

Lech has six MICHELIN Key hotels for 2026, more than any other ski resort in Austria. Two of them hold Two Keys, and one, Hotel & Chalet Aurelio, is new, with 18 rooms on the Schlegelkopf slope. By our count, MICHELIN’s 2026 list for Austria has 44 Key hotels in its ski resorts and mountain villages: 11 at Two Keys and 33 at One. None holds Three. Austria’s two Three-Key hotels are Hotel Sacher Wien and Rosewood Schloss Fuschl, one in Vienna and one by the Fuschlsee. Schlosshotel Fiss moves up to Two Keys, the only promotion in the country this year, and four ski hotels enter at One Key: Hotel Nesslerhof in Großarl, the Aurelio in Lech, Hotel Schöne Aussicht above Sölden and Ullrhaus in St. Anton. The 44 have 3,093 rooms between them. The tiers come from MICHELIN’s 2026 list for Austria, published in German on 18 September; its English page still shows the 2025 selection. The other 28 Austrian Key hotels are in Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck, by the lakes and in the countryside.

Eleven at Two Keys, 33 at One: the Austrian list

Towns are as MICHELIN prints them, with Oberlech and Zug under Lech, and room counts come from the header of each hotel’s MICHELIN page.

Tyrol has 28 of the 44, the province of Salzburg eight, Vorarlberg seven and Styria one. By area, the Arlberg has eight, the Ötztal six and the Zillertal with Tux five, while Kitzbühel has four and Ischgl, Großarl and Leogang three each. The largest is Hotel Kitzhof Mountain Design Resort in Kitzbühel, with 163 rooms. The smallest is Hotel Tannenhof in St. Anton, with seven suites.

The Arlberg: Lech, Oberlech, Zug and St. Anton

Lech has two Two-Key hotels. Hotel Almhof Schneider has 52 rooms in a converted farmhouse at the foot of the Schlegelkopf, “an alpine hotel for nearly a century”, in MICHELIN’s words, furnished with “local wool textiles and actual antiques”. Severins, The Alpine Retreat, has ten. Its spa has a sauna, a jacuzzi and a Turkish bath, and guests can “sip a cocktail by a crackling fire in the library lounge”.

The new name in the village is the Aurelio. It stands on the Schlegelkopf piste, with ski-in and ski-out access, and its spa has an indoor pool, several saunas, steam rooms and a cold plunge pool, while “the open fire of the Licca Lounge is particularly inviting in winter”. Post Lech Arlberg, a Relais & Châteaux house, has 56 rooms. “The single and double rooms are impressive enough”, MICHELIN notes, but “the apartments and suites are from another world”. Above the village, Burg Vital Resort in Oberlech has 74 rooms, a wellness area on three floors and accommodation “split between seven snowcapped chalets”. In Zug, the Rote Wand Gourmet Hotel has 60 rooms and a new 1,500-square-metre spa, with a Finnish outdoor sauna, a steam grotto and a pool where “even in winter the water is warm enough for an outdoor swim”.

St. Anton has two. Hotel Tannenhof, at Two Keys, contains “a mere seven suites, as well as a luxe little spa”, and MICHELIN suggests arriving by private helicopter at the St. Anton helipad. Ullrhaus is new. It is “named for Ullr, the Norse god of snow”, with 40 rooms, a 17-metre indoor pool and a Grand Suite with a sauna of its own, and in the winter season its kitchen serves a nine-course tasting menu from Thursday to Saturday. The Arlberg lift dates are in our guide to the Alpine winter openings.

The Ötztal, Kitzbühel and Ischgl

The Ötztal has six Key hotels, and three of them hold Two Keys. At Obergurgl, Alpen-Wellness Resort Hochfirst has 85 rooms, direct lift access and indoor and outdoor pools. TOP Hotel Hochgurgl, with 71 rooms, is ski-in and ski-out, with “a deliciously warm outdoor pool directly overlooking the slopes”. Down the valley at Längenfeld, Naturhotel Waldklause has 59 rooms “completely integrated within the Tyrolean fir forests it calls home”. The new One-Key hotel, Hotel Schöne Aussicht, stands at 2,090 metres in Hochsölden, above the tree line. It has 56 rooms, a wine cellar and “a Skybar and cigar lounge for the hours after dark”, and MICHELIN notes that “access to Sölden’s vast glacier terrain is what brings most winter guests here”. Das Central, the largest in the valley with 125 rooms, runs a free shuttle to the slopes. The Secret Sölden has 44, and its suites each come “with a full kitchen and freestanding tub”.

Kitzbühel has four. Grand Tirolia Kitzbühel, the town’s Two-Key hotel, has 145 rooms, indoor and outdoor pools and an après scene of “champagne, DJ sets, a jazz club”, as MICHELIN puts it. Hotel Kitzhof Mountain Design Resort fills its indoor pool with “Grander (specially purified) water”. Hotel Weisses Roessl dates from the 17th century and “was comprehensively refurbished in 2017”. Schwarzer Adler takes adults only. It has 88 rooms, “a buzzing rooftop pool with wraparound views” and the Secret Bar. The Hahnenkamm downhill is on the Streif on Saturday 23 January, as listed in our 2027 calendar.

Ischgl’s three all hold One Key. Hotel Trofana Royal Resort has 111 rooms, “less than five minutes by foot from the gondola”, and Schlosshotel Ischgl, with 73, has direct access to the lifts. Elizabeth Arthotel is the smallest of the three, with 39 rooms, a collection of contemporary European art and an infinity pool in the penthouse.

The Zillertal, Fiss and Salzburg’s mountains

Schlosshotel Fiss has 135 rooms in Fiss, the middle one of the three villages of the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area. Its spa includes a water park. The hotel is built around families, with “a family-oriented suite of activities and play areas”. In Tux, in the side valley at the head of the Zillertal, Aktiv & Wellnesshotel Bergfried holds Two Keys with 70 rooms, a spa with indoor and outdoor pools and a tavern, the Bergfriedalm. Hotel Alpin Spa Tuxerhof, also in Tux, has 60 rooms and a rooftop pool with “knockout views of the Tux Alps”. Further down, ZillergrundRock Luxury Mountain Resort sits above Mayrhofen with 67 rooms and an infinity pool on two levels. Das Posthotel in Zell am Ziller has 38 rooms, “most of them suites and apartments”, and five saunas. Sportresidenz Zillertal at Uderns has 33, and a golf course for the summer.

Salzburg’s mountains have eight. Großarl has three, two of them at Two Keys. DAS EDELWEISS Salzburg Mountain Resort has 136 rooms, ski-in and ski-out access with its own ski depot, and an infinity pool, and MICHELIN writes that there is no room in the house “without a postcard view”. Family Nature Resort Moar Gut, with 46 rooms, is built for children, with a trampoline room, a baby spa and “a petting zoo with Icelandic horses”. Hotel Nesslerhof, new at One Key, stands “directly across from the Kieserlbahn ski lift”. It has 86 rooms, a heated infinity pool and a natural swimming pond. Yoga classes and guided hikes are included.

In Leogang, Hotel Krallerhof has 124 rooms, an Olympic-length infinity pool, a natural bathing lake and a collection of contemporary art, while mama thresl has 50 rooms and the gondola station at its door. Naturhotel Forsthofgut spreads 109 rooms over several buildings around its waldSPA. At Maria Alm, die HOCHKÖNIGIN Mountain Resort has 76 rooms and the High Queen Bar. The Comodo in Bad Gastein, with 70, takes “its stylistic inspiration from Sixties modernism and classic Art Deco”.

Seefeld, the Stubai and the smaller villages

Alpine Resort Sacher Seefeld has 81 rooms. Inside, it is “maximalist mountaincore, all warm wood and antlers and rustic stone”. In the Stubai valley, Spa Hotel Jagdhof at Neustift has 70 rooms, suites and villas. Eriro, at 1,550 metres on the Ehrwalder Alm above Ehrwald, is reached “only by cable car during ski season, and snowcat out of season”, and it has an onsen pool and no televisions. Guests play board games instead. Das Kronthaler at Achenkirch, by the Achensee, is “a ski-in/ski-out fixture” with 99 rooms. Bergblick at Grän-Haldensee, in the Tannheimer Tal, “has been providing Tyrolean hospitality in one form or another since the early 17th century”. In the Bregenzerwald, DAS SCHIFF at Hittisau has 33 rooms and an outdoor pool, with cross-country trails in the region.

Three of the 44 are mountain villages with no ski area named on their MICHELIN pages. On the Mieming plateau, Alpenresort Schwarz has 160 rooms and “a series of nine indoor and outdoor pools”, and Holzleiten Bio Wellness Hotel at Obsteig has 45 rooms and a large sunbathing lawn. At Mariazell, in Styria, Hideaway Hotel Montestyria has chalets with kitchens and breakfast delivered, and MICHELIN notes that “hikes and ski tours begin right at your doorstep”.

The Luxury.it perspective

Austria’s mountain Keys go to resort hotels more than to grand hotels. There is no Three-Key palace above the valleys. The eleven Two-Key hotels range from seven suites in St. Anton to 145 rooms in Kitzbühel, and what they share is water: spas, saunas and pools, indoors and out, run through the list, and the four newcomers follow the pattern. For skiing first, the Arlberg and the Ötztal hold 14 of the 44 between them. For families, Moar Gut and Schlosshotel Fiss are both at Two Keys. The Swiss side, with four Three-Key palaces, is in our Swiss Alps list, and the French resorts are in our French Alps list.
